Michael Krasznay-Krausz , also Michael Krausz , Hungarian Mihály Krasznai Krausz (born April 11, 1897 in Pancsova ; † November 3, 1940 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian-Austrian composer.

Life

Michael Krasznay-Krausz came from a Jewish family. His father was a gramophone manufacturer. He started composing at the age of 13. He studied counterpoint and composition at the University of Music in Budapest with Victor von Herzfeld , whose first pupil he was. Zoltán Kodály is one of his other teachers . After presenting his opera Marika at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest in 1919 , he emigrated to Vienna . He first composed symphonic music and operas, and from 1923 turned to operetta. His first operetta Bajazzos Abenteuer was premiered on December 22nd, 1923 in the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna . His operetta A Woman of Format with Fritzi Massary had a great success in Berlin in 1927 .

In the early 1930s he lived in Berlin for a while, where some of his operettas were performed again. However, he soon had to leave the city for good in 1933. In May 1934 there was a trial between Krasznay-Krausz and Paul Abraham in which the latter accused him of plagiarism. The dispute was about Krasznay-Krausz's Yellow Lily (the composer referred to it as "Hungarian Rhapsody" to avoid the term "Operetta"; it premiered on January 5, 1934 in the Budapest City Theater, the German premiere took place on May 24 in the Vienna Theater an der Wien ) and Abrahams Märchen im Grand-Hotel , which premiered in the same Theater an der Wien two months before the German premiere of The Yellow Lily , and in which a number of numbers occur that are strikingly similar to one another. Krasznay-Krausz was able to prove that the songs in question were composed by him as early as August 1932, and the process ended peacefully, with the two agreeing that Vienna should be reserved for Paul Abraham as a performance venue. The yellow lily was played in Budapest in the years that followed and saw a total of 20 performances.

After the success of the "musical crime novel" Dixie , which premiered on February 8, 1938, his new operetta Girl in Danger was rehearsed in the Theater an der Wien . The premiere was set for mid / end of February and the individual scenes were broadcast on the radio. But because of the annexation of Austria , they did not come to fruition. The Theater an der Wien was closed on March 17th as a musical entertainment theater and Krasznay-Krausz had to flee to Budapest.

His last operetta, Marion , was performed in the Budapest City Theater on March 23, 1940 , but was unsuccessful. The title role was played by Emmi Kosáry, which ended her acting career.

Michael Krasznay-Krausz died on November 3, 1940 in Budapest at the age of 43 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery on Kozma Street in Budapest.

Krasznay-Krausz is also known as the author of numerous hits.
