Wilhelm Sterk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Sterk (born June 28, 1880 in Budapest ; † probably October 11, 1944 in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp ), also Willy, Willi, Vilmos Sterk, was an Austrian playwright of Hungarian origin and operetta librettist.

He also wrote under the stage name Arthur MacKellington.

Live and act

Wilhelm Sterk lived in Vienna since his youth and worked there as a librettist for musical works. Between 1907 and 1937 he wrote numerous libretti and vocal texts for various operettas by composers such as Leo Ascher , Edmund Eysler , Richard Fall , Leon Jessel , Georg Jarno , Karl Loube , Rudolf Nelson , Robert Stolz and Carl Michael Ziehrer .

Sterk also worked with the actor and cabaret artist Fritz Grünbaum and wrote with him, in addition to texts for the cabaret Hölle in Vienna, also some comedies and revues. The comedy Dorine and Chance , which premiered in 1923 at the New Theater am Zoo in Berlin, was filmed by Fritz Freisler for Sascha-Film in Vienna in 1928 with Ernö Verebes and Hans Thimig in the leading roles.

Sterk also worked as a librettist with colleagues such as Friedrich Liebstöckl, Fritz Löhner-Beda , Ernst Steffan , Rudolf Österreicher and Alfred Maria Willner . He wrote the libretto for Ernst Steffan's operetta Agri with Willner ; with Österreicher the libretti to Das stupme Herz and to Yvette and her friends .

Sterk was co-founder and director of the artist games Pan , which opened in 1919 in Vienna 1, Riemergasse.

Sterk also worked as a hit poet. Closer collaboration arose with the composers Willy Engel-Berger and Artur Marcell Werau , with whom he wrote several successful hits. Became known z. B. from the former the gallant slow fox A little silk and in it you , from the latter the frivolous foxtrot song You stole my wife from me, thank you very much! whose text he wrote together with Fritz Löhner-Beda.

Many of the composers Sterk worked for were Jews who were persecuted in Germany after 1933 and there after the annexation of Austria in 1938 . Sterk also fell into isolation because of his Jewish origins, although he had left Judaism in 1912. His last address in Vienna was Schaumburgergasse 10/15. On January 5, 1943, he was deported from Vienna to the Theresienstadt ghetto . Until 1944 he took part in the theater activities organized in Theresienstadt.

On October 9, 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he was probably killed immediately upon arrival on October 11.
