Eric Helgar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eric Helgar (born February 8, 1910 in Regensburg , † June 14, 1992 in Munich ) was a singer, stage and film actor, television presenter and composer.

life and work

Eric Helgar was born in Regensburg in 1910 on a tour of his father, the Swiss opera singer Gustl Helgar. He grew up in Zurich. At the age of 17 he moved to live with his grandmother in Berlin. There he met Herbert Grenzebach , a friend of his father's and artistic director of the Ultraphon record company . He said optimistically to Eric Helgar: "[...] if your father has such a great voice, you should actually be able to sing too!" And invited him to test recordings. Grenzebach was correct in his assumption. Helgar got his first record deal.

The singer and film actor Eric Helgar owed his film career primarily to his popularity as a young record and radio performer . Mostly, however, Eric Helgar was a singer on records. The first recordings were made for the Ultraphon label in December 1930 in Berlin, then - from 1932 - almost exclusively for the newly founded record brand of Telefunken . In some cases, Helgar initially worked for numerous other Berlin record companies until around 1935 - also anonymously. Helgar's interesting, varied and varied repertoire was carried by a pleasantly clear, expressive and easily recognizable voice and ranged from simple hits to tango and to demanding operetta melodies - such as by Ralph Benatzky (e.g. Telefunken A 1702, 1934, see below); and with no less demanding chansons and cabaret recordings on big band swing from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. He made his film debut in 1933 with What women dream ; a year later he played the leading role in Der Springer von Pontresina and with the song We want to be friends for life , interpreted in this film , he achieved a popular hit. From the mid-1930s on, Eric Helgar was one of the main vocal interpreters of Adalbert Lutter's popular dance orchestra for Telefunken (see shortlist, below), including at least one piece of propaganda for the National Socialists (e.g. "70 million - one blow" 1937) .

Helgar can rarely be identified as a composer of his own titles, for example the summer tango Where ocean waves rush (TO Lutter, Telefunken A 2513, 1938, see list below). Until the end of the Second World War he worked as an actor in other films, including Gauner im Frack (1937), Friedemann Bach (1941) and Romance in Moll (1943). He also lent his voice to less vocal actors such as Karl Schönböck in the film Der Blaufuchs (1938). His last serious cinematic work was The Lady (1964). His career lasted well into the 1980s (including as a television presenter for the music program "Auf Ihr Wunsch"). Eric Helgar has made well over 1000 recordings with many leading German dance orchestras, making him one of the most important German-speaking vocal interpreters of the shellac record era.
