action

The young Styrian Therese Brandl absolutely wants to go to the theater and for this reason takes the train to Vienna to receive artistic training there. The scholarship granted by the old Countess Hoyer is intended to guarantee her financial independence. Since the student does not know that she should be picked up from the train station in Vienna, she sits in a taxi as soon as she arrives and has both an inexpensive hotel and a nice little pub recommended. In this bar with the somewhat grandiose name of the Grand Mughal, Therese sniffed Viennese city air for the first time and was immediately addressed by an older gentleman, a type of graying gentleman and bon vivant with some life experience. After several glasses of wine, you later leave the location together and go to Therese's room. Obviously things go to extremes there and they spend the night together without being introduced to each other. The surprise for Therese is all the greater when she goes to the drama academy the following day to start her training there: because her future teacher is none other than the beau and lover of the previous night, Dr. Alexander Dahlen. Both recognize each other immediately. In order not to compromise her or herself, Dahlen treats Therese like a stranger, which shakes the inexperienced Styrian country to the core, as the girl believed that she was more than just a playmate for one night for this man of her dreams.

Therese finds it difficult to deal with this circumstance, as she believes in both "great love" and "love at first sight". She doesn't know that Dahlen fell in love with her too. But he hardly gives this mesalliance a chance. Things get worse when Dahlen's secretary Redl, who had obviously seen the two of them in the Great Mogul , makes allusions and spreads rumors. Therese can no longer deal with this situation and confronts Dahlen. But he reacts evasively and does not want to admit his love publicly. Therese is toying with the idea of dropping out of training and returning to Styria. To get rid of the rumors spread by Redl, Alexander Dahlen fled to an engagement with an old friend, the journalist Nina Baldass. She instinctively suspects that he is not taking this step out of love for her, but comes to terms with this fact. Theresa meets Alexander for the last time, and the young woman learns of Dahlen's engagement to Nina. Deeply hit, she wants to kill herself, but at the last moment she is prevented from jumping off the roof. When Countess Hoyer confronts Therese, she tells her about her love accident. Finally she packs her seven things and drives to the train station. In the meantime, Countess Dahlen has buttoned up and washed his head properly. The man now realizes his mistake. When Therese wants to say goodbye to her loved one by phone at the train station, he confesses his love to her. A little later, the two of them embrace there.

Reviews

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung found that “Paula Wessely knows how to fill her role with convincing life. Her partner is Rudolf Forster, whose role imposes extreme restraint on him. The cultivated character portrayals of Hedwig Bleibtreus and Gustav Waldaus are excellent. "

"Antiquated melodrama, biggest plus: the elegant photography by Franz Planer, who after forced emigration to the United States was one of the leading cameramen (" Letter from an Unknown Woman ") in Hollywood."

“In addition to some strong scenes, a lot of clichéd romance, captured by the conventionally guided camera; the film stands and falls with the performance of Paula Wessely. "

  1. Although a purely German production company, Carl Froelich-Film GmbH, produced this film, the film was treated as an Austrian production during the Third Reich because it was shot in a Vienna studio (Tobis-Sascha-Ateliers).
