Willy Dehmel
Willy Dehmel (born February 26, 1909 in Berlin ; † June 15, 1971 in Bad Wiessee ) was a German songwriter.
Life
Willy Dehmel studied theater studies in Berlin. He also took acting classes. He began his musical career as a pianist in silent film cinemas and worked for various dance bands. In 1931 he began working as a lyricist with the composer Franz Grothe , his cousin, whose main lyricist he soon became. This congenial collaboration resulted in songs for over 50 films between 1933 and 1961. The most important interpreters were Marta Eggerth , Willi Forst , Johannes Heesters , Lilian Harvey , Kirsten Heiberg , Lizzi Waldmüller and Marika Rökk . But it also wrote text outside of the film scene.
Willy Dehmel was also active in organizing music. Since 1950 he was a member of the GEMA supervisory board . He was also the president of the German Lyric Association .

Honor
In memory of the lyricist from a foundation, GEMA has awarded the Willy Dehmel Prize every two years since 1985 . Lyricists are honored "who, in the spirit of the founder, have a successful overall work in the field of German-language popular song and who have contributed to the reputation of their profession".
