occupation

Gynecologist Dr. Prätorius is the first film adaptation of the play Dr. med. Job Prätorius von Curt Goetz , who wrote the script himself and directed the film together with Karl Peter Gillmann . The world premiere took place on January 15, 1950 in Munich . The production was his first job after returning from California , where he had emigrated with his wife Valérie von Martens during the Nazi era . The Goetz / von Martens couple also took on the two main roles.

action

Because of his kindness and philanthropy, the doctor enjoys great popularity among patients, medical staff and students alike. Only his colleague Prof. Speiter grudges him the success.

When his patient Maria Violetta wants to commit suicide because of an illegitimate pregnancy, Praetorius takes on the young woman. When he wants to carefully prepare her father for the news, the latter considers Praetorius to be a more than welcome admirer of his daughter. As a deep affection developed between the doctor and his patient, the two finally marry. The private happiness of the two stirs up the envy of Prof. Speiter. With Praetorius' mysterious factotum Shunderson, he finally believes that he can uncover dark points from the medicine's past. But Praetorius succeeds before a court of honor in refuting all allegations with wit and astonishing revelations.

In Goetz's staging, tragic-comic and melancholy moments in the piece are particularly emphasized. Both humanistic values are emphasized and the problems of abortion and the death penalty are viewed critically. In addition, Praetorius endeavors both continuously and in vain to research the microbe of human stupidity, which he considers to be the cause of envy, hatred and war.
