László Vadnay
László Vadnay , also Laslo Vadnay, Laszlo Vadnai, Laszlo Vadnay and Ladislaus Vadnay , (born June 6, 1904 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † April 18, 1967 in Budapest, Hungary ) was a Hungarian-American writer and screenwriter .
Life
László Vadnay began to write early on - initially as a newspaper reporter and sketch writer for Budapest cabarets. As part of the cabaret double conference, he created the principle of The G'scheite and the Stupid with the two characters Hacsek and Sajó. The two are Budapest coffee house visitors who want to change the world from the coffee house table. First invented as a newspaper column, the two characters later came onto the stage. Later, Vadnay also enjoyed success as a playwright. He wrote a total of 15 (mostly comedic) pieces and 176 one-act plays. Several times he collaborated with István Békeffy , including in 1932 on the three-act operetta “ Tango at midnight ”.
In the same year László Vadnay made his debut as a screenwriter for Hungarian film, with which he remained connected until the end of 1937. In 1936, as “Ladislaus Vadnay”, he was also involved in the script for the Austrian émigré film Fräulein Lilli with the Hungarian film star Franziska Gaal . Here he collaborated again with his colleague Békeffy. In 1938, in view of the increasing anti-Semitism , Vadnay left Europe in his Hungarian homeland and moved to the United States . In Hollywood , the Hungarian, for whom the foreign (English) language should prove to be a hindrance when creating scripts, initially had to limit himself to the activity of a supplier of ideas and stories. In this role, Vadnai, who in the USA mostly called himself Laslo Vadnay because of the easier spelling, supplied films such as " Josette " (1938), " The House of Seven Sins " (1940), "The Second Face" (1943), " South Sea Vagabonds ”(1950) and“ Photographer from Love ”(1952). He mostly supplied scripts in cooperation with American author colleagues.
In the United States, too, light-weight fabrics were his profession, in both film and television, but there were also excursions into the dramatic field. In addition, Vadnay, an American citizen since December 27, 1946, also supplied US theaters with his templates. His film career ended in the 1960s with "two veritable megaflops", the Jayne Mansfield flick " It Happened in Athens " and the Jerry Lewis clothes " The Moon Calf " . Vadnay died in 1967 while visiting Hungary. His widow Claire, who was three years his junior, survived him by a good 30 years.
