Ernst Arnold (born February 12, 1890 in Vienna ; † January 5, 1962 there ; real name Ernst Jeschke ) was a composer and one of the most famous writers and singers of Viennese songs .

Life

Together with his brother Fritz Imhoff he attended the drama school of Ludwig Gothov-Grünecke and made his debut in Reichenberg in 1912 in Leo Ascher's “Highness tanzt Waltz”. From 1914 to 1919 Arnold was engaged at the Graz Opera and appeared for the first time as an interpreter of his own songs in 1917. In 1919 he moved to the Carltheater in Vienna and, after founding RAVAG, became one of the most popular singers on the radio, who subsequently made numerous recordings. He appeared in numerous films and revues, including a. with Karl Farkas , and later was a frequent guest on television.

Ernst Arnold composed around 800 songs. In 1920 he experienced world successes as a composer with Da out there in the Wachau (text: Erwin Weill ) and with you, only you . In 1938 he was temporarily banned from performing by the National Socialists . In 1960 he was awarded the Great Silver Medal of the Republic of Austria .

His honorary grave is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 33A, Row 2, No. 11). In 1993 the parking area between Rechter Wienzeile and Wienfluss from Pilgramgasse was named after him; His last place of residence was in the nearby Hamburgerstrasse 20. Part of the estate is in the Vienna Library in the City Hall .
