The evening school in front of the Holstentor (ASH) is a state evening school and an institution of the second education path for adults. It enables you to catch up on the corresponding school-leaving qualifications at an evening grammar school , an evening secondary school and an evening secondary school. The school is housed in a listed school building on the edge of downtown Hamburg in the St. Pauli district .

history

The grammar school was set up in 1943 as an evening school mainly for soldiers who were no longer fit for military service and reopened in 1945. This makes it the second oldest state evening grammar school in Germany, after the Peter A. Silbermann School in Berlin. Only later, in March 1955, the evening secondary school was added, and from February 1987 the evening main school, which today work in a network under one roof.

Today's school

The evening school in front of the Holstentor offers working people from the age of 18, in addition to employment, the opportunity to acquire the secondary school leaving certificate and the Abitur in free evening classes. The school year in the Gymnasium begins in February each year, in the other two school types every six months in August and February. Classes usually take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There are also morning courses in the secondary school and afternoon courses in the three types of school. The school tries to reduce the heavy burden on the students through special support. Pupils with a secondary school leaving certificate can acquire the Abitur within three years. The lessons take place in modern technical and laboratory rooms with modern electronic equipment. On every floor of the school there is a rolling PC cart with 26 laptops with their own WLAN and printer. The school is known for its culture days at the end of the school year.

The school teaches according to the general Hamburg curriculum that applies to day schools, and its student body is subject to the same regulations for the central final exams as at all Hamburg schools. Your results are therefore comparable to the first educational path and certify that the graduates did well.

building

The evening grammar school Vor dem Holstentor and the preparatory college have their own building available for foreign students, which the Hamburg construction director Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann designed around 1875 for the then Oberrealschule am Holstenglacis and which was extended by a third floor in 1912/13. In the auditorium, plaster heads of Charles Darwin , Alexander von Humboldt , Justus von Liebig and Carl Friedrich Gauß remind of the mathematical and scientific orientation of the time. The architecture is based on the style of historicism and forms a listed ensemble with the surrounding courthouse, also designed by Zimmermann. In terms of style, the atriums are based on forms from the 16th century ( Renaissance ) and are reminiscent of the solemn dignity of Italian palaces (e.g. Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice ). The glass roof was renovated in February 2014 and is now more translucent, more heat-insulating and offers more sound insulation. The old school desks from the Wilhelminian era (see photo) are still preserved in one room. The school has a large auditorium with one of the last secular school organs in Hamburg, a small canteen for snacks and drinks, and a gym. The renovation of the masonry and the roof was completed in 2019. An elevator and a new kiosk were installed. The gym was also refurbished for use by the sports clubs. The building is on the list of cultural monuments in Hamburg-St. Pauli and on the list of cultural monuments in the Hamburg district of Hamburg-Mitte .

Cooperations

The school has a cooperation with the St. Pauli football club , which has its stadium in the immediate vicinity.

environmental Protection

The evening grammar school had a solar system installed on the school roof. It was financed with donations from the Friends' Association. The electricity generated is fed into the Hamburg electricity grid and sold to the electricity supplier. Further investments are made with the money raised.

Student projects

From the beginning of this millennium until 2014, cross-school project weeks were carried out regularly, the first few years twice a year, then once a year, e.g. B. on the subject of basic income or on the subject of water .

Support association

In 1992, the friends' association was founded with the aim of supporting the needs of the school, especially those relating to the second education path, and promoting projects that cannot be financed from school fees. He would also like to be a network for the alumni that can be used both privately and professionally. A separate website was created for this purpose (see under web links). Of course, it also serves to maintain contact between all those involved or interested in the school, and it is also important for the school to be able to monitor the extent to which it has been able to support the student body in achieving its goals.
