The J. Geils Band was an American blues rock / rhythm and blues group formed in Worcester , Massachusetts in 1967 . They were successful with their R&B sound in the 1970s, before they adopted a more pop-oriented sound after moving to EMI America Records in 1978, which brought them MTV Airplay and their biggest hit, Centerfold, in 1981 .

In Germany the intro Believe in Me (from the album Hotline ) was used as the title melody of the WDR- Rockpalast .

Career

The group began as an acoustic blues trio in the mid-1960s with singer and guitarist John Warren "J." Geils , bassist Danny Klein ( Dr. Funk ) and harmonica player Richard Salwitz ( Magic Dick ). When Geils studied at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a few semesters , the group first operated under the name Snoopy & the Sopwith Camels . In 1967 the fast-speaking former DJ Peter Wolf , who became the band's vocalist, and drummer Stephen Jo Bladd, both from Boston , joined and the group played an electric R&B from then on .

Organist Seth Justman completed the group in 1968, which signed with Atlantic Records in 1970 under Ahmet Ertegün . The first FM radio success was the live recorded single First I Look at the Purse , followed by several hit singles in the 1970s, of which Musta Got Lost was the most successful in 1974.

In 1977 the group released the album Monkey Island , which was only released under the name Geils . After their Atlantic contract expired, the group signed with EMI America Records .

After initial commercial successes, the group that toured steadily seemed nothing more than a top notch party band. Only the albums Monkey Island (1977) and the more conventional rock-oriented Sanctuary changed this.

The J. Geils Band became known to the European audience through the broadcast of the 4th Rockpalast on April 21, 1979 on television and radio, when “they provided 150% energy” for “enthusiasm without limits”, with “Peter Wolf in the crowd bathed “.

In the early 1980s the group rose with the humorous single Love Stinks and above all with the album Freeze Frame and the singles Centerfold (6 weeks at number 1 in the US charts ), the title track Freeze Frame (number 4), Flamethrower (number 30) ), Angel in Blue (40th place) entered the charts.

With the album, the group toured in the opening act of the Rolling Stones in 1981 in North America and 1982 in Europe; In 1983 she released the third live album Showtime . Peter Wolf made negative headlines when he stirred up the audience at a Germany concert and asked if they liked Schlager, and then Peter Maffay, who performed afterwards, was pelted with eggs and other objects.

Wolf left the group in 1983 due to musical differences and began a successful solo career. The group recorded an album without a Wolf, You're Gettin 'Even While I'm Gettin' Odd , with Justman as singer. Despite a US tour, the album only reached number 80 and the single Concealed Weapons only reached number 63 in 1984. The band gave a final sign of life with the single Fright Night (1985, number 91), the title track of the film of the same name (German: “ Die ravenenschwarze Nacht - Fright Night ”) and broke up in the same year.

In 1999 the group planned a reunion tour with Wolf. This was canceled after ticket sales started slowly. On May 22, 2006, after 20 years, the six original members reunited on the occasion of Danny Klein's 60th birthday at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.

Wolf continues to perform solo, while the rest of the group occasionally performs without Wolf. Geils and Magic Dick founded the group Blues Time and released an album of the same name. Geils devoted himself to Boston jazz projects such as The New Guitar Summit and Gerry Beaudoin, with whom he occasionally appeared, and produced, among other things, the CD for Stone Crazy, on which Danny Klein also participated. He also restored sports cars. Geils died in April 2017. Klein also runs Z Square Restaurant in Boston's Harvard Square. Magic Dick brought out its own patented harmonicas and tours with Mark Hummel. Seth Justman produces other bands and wrote the music for the PBS television documentary Country Boys , which also featured Magic Dick. Bladd has retired from the music business.
