Wolfgang Vaerst

Wolfgang Vaerst (born August 1, 1931 in Essen ; † September 24, 2015 in Frankfurt am Main ) was the first president of the Deutsche Bundesbahn from 1972 to 1981 .

Career

Vaerst passed the Abitur in 1952 and then studied economics and law at the universities of Munich and Cologne . On June 30, 1956, he passed the first state examination in law, followed by the legal clerkship on November 20, 1960, the Great State Examination. On 14 June 1961 he received his doctorate with the theme of the parliamentary mandate in the Federal Republic to Dr. iur.

From March 1, 1961 Vaerst worked as a financial assessor in the financial administration of North Rhine-Westphalia . On March 1, 1963 he became a government assessor and on June 1, 1964 a councilor. On June 15, 1965, he left the service of the state to work as managing director for the Bundesverband Werkverkehr e. V. to work. There he received the offer from the Federal Minister of Transport to take over the management of the railway department in the Federal Ministry of Transport on September 1, 1968 .

He held this position until 1972. For a time he was also President of the Federal Association of Transport, Economy and Logistics e. V. (BWVL). On May 13, 1972, he replaced Heinz Maria Oeftering as the first president of the Deutsche Bundesbahn .

During his tenure, among other things, he laid the foundations for today's long-distance transport system. For example, he introduced second class and hourly intervals at InterCity . He also set the course for the ICE traffic that started in 1991 . The start of construction of the first two German high-speed lines Hanover – Würzburg and Mannheim – Stuttgart falls within his term of office.

As President of the Federal Railroad, he regularly published the Railway Handbook. On May 13, 1982 Reiner Gohlke Vaerst succeeded in this office.

After retiring as CEO, he continued to work as a lawyer for the Federal Railroad. Even afterwards he worked as a lawyer for a Berlin law firm.

Honors

Vaerst was u. a. Honorary President of the Ahaus-Alstätter Eisenbahn Group and the Eurofima Board of Directors . He was awarded the trustee board of Deutsche Sporthilfe , to which he had been a curator since 1974 . He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1982) and the Great Gold Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria (1984).
