Karl Wittrock

Karl Wittrock (born September 29, 1917 in Kassel ; † February 1, 2000 in Wiesbaden ) was a German lawyer and politician ( SPD ) and President of the Federal Audit Office from 1978 to 1985 .

Life and work

Karl Wittrock came from a social democratic family; his father Karl Wittrock sen. had already been a top official of the Kassel SPD in the Weimar Republic . Wittrock jun. joined the Socialist Workers' Youth before 1933 , which was soon banned by the National Socialists.

After graduating from high school, Wittrock was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1938 and took part in the Second World War until his capture in 1944 . After his release from American captivity, Wittrock studied law in Frankfurt am Main from 1946 to 1949 .

There he joined the SPD in 1946 and was involved in the Socialist German Student Union (SDS), which he chaired in 1947/48 as chairman for the US zone - alongside Helmut Schmidt for the British zone.

After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer and was involved in local politics , among other things .

MP

From 1953 to 1963 Karl Wittrock was a member of the German Bundestag , from 1961 as a directly elected member of the Wiesbaden constituency . He devoted himself in particular to environmental and legal issues. Since 1956 he was a member of the SPD parliamentary group executive; from 1961 he was also chairman of the legal policy working group of the SPD parliamentary group.

Public offices

In May 1963 Wittrock resigned his parliamentary mandate, since he had been assigned the office of district president in Wiesbaden, which he held until 1967.

From April 1, 1967 to May 20, 1974 he was a civil servant state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport , which from 1969 to 1972 was called the "Federal Ministry of Transport and for the Post Office and Telecommunications".

From February 1, 1978 to September 30, 1985 he was finally President of the Federal Audit Office.
