Josef Mayer (born August 28, 1887 in Koblenz , † June 27, 1961 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German lawyer and from 1950 to 1957 President of the Federal Audit Office .

Life

Mayer studied law. He took part in the First World War as a lieutenant in the reserve. Afterwards Mayer entered the civil service, from August 1920 he was a councilor in the Reich Ministry of the Interior . In 1930 Mayer came to the Reich Ministry of Finance , where from October 1932 he headed the general department of the budget department.

In the years 1938/1939, Mayer, who was not a member of the NSDAP , offered remarkable resistance to the intended expansion of the Nazi apparatus by obtaining reports from the Reich Court of Auditors on job requirements in the budget preparation procedure and thus hoping to support his restrictive goals. The Ministry of Finance asked the Reich Audit Office u. a. Expert opinion on the establishment plan of the administration at the SS disposal force and an examination at the People's Court and the public prosecutor's office. From August 1941 Mayer headed the budget department of the Reich Ministry of Finance.

From August 1945 to autumn 1946, Mayer headed the budget department of the newly founded German Central Finance Administration for the Soviet zone of occupation in East Berlin. In the summer of 1946 there were considerable conflicts with the Soviet occupying forces, which caused Mayer to move to the British zone , where he took over the management of the Central Budget Office in Hamburg from October 1946 . In autumn 1948 Mayer became Vice President of the Court of Auditors in the United Economic Area in Hamburg, and later in Frankfurt am Main. Mayer took over the business of the auditor's office on a temporary basis. On December 7, 1950, Mayer became the first President of the Federal Audit Office. From 1952 he took over the duties of the Federal Commissioner for Economic Efficiency in the federal administration . In 1957 Mayer retired.
