Arthur Huebscher

Arthur Hübscher (born January 3, 1897 in Cologne , † April 10, 1985 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German philosopher , cultural scientist and philologist .

Life

Hübscher initially worked as a feature section editor in Munich, including for the Süddeutsche Monatshefte . From 1936 to 1982 he headed the German Schopenhauer Society in Frankfurt am Main and was the editor of the Schopenhauer yearbook and the historical-critical complete edition of Arthur Schopenhauer 's works, letters and conversations . His writings deal mainly with the life and work of Schopenhauer. From 1982 until his death he was the senior president of the Schopenhauer Society. In 1959 he commissioned the artist Albert Windisch to draw a portrait of Schopenhauer, which was also printed as a woodcut.

Hübscher received numerous awards for his work, including the Schopenhauer Medal and the Goethe plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main in 1960 on the occasion of Schopenhauer's 100th anniversary of his death , in 1967 the plaque of honor of the city of Frankfurt am Main and the Goethe plaque of the State of Hesse , the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1961) with star (1975) and in 1977 an honorary doctorate from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

At the request of his widow, Hübscher's urn was buried next to Schopenhauer in his grave complex in the Frankfurt main cemetery.
