Franz Ludwig Schmidt-Knatz (born January 6, 1913 in Frankfurt am Main ; † June 21, 2002 ) was a German lawyer and President of the Polytechnic Society Frankfurt am Main, who was involved in many ways, including his voluntary work City of Frankfurt has earned.

Life

The son of a lawyer, born in 1913, came from a family that had lived in Frankfurt am Main for generations. After Schmidt-Knatz had successfully completed the model school, he studied law in Heidelberg, Munich and Kiel until he passed the first state examination in 1934. Schmidt-Knatz was admitted to the bar in 1946 after his return from captivity, and in 1952 he was appointed notary. Since he had gained a foothold professionally, the convinced Frankfurt native began to volunteer for the common good and was accepted into the Polytechnic Society in 1954.

When the company needed a new president in 1966 after the sudden death of Karlheinz Müller, the choice fell on the established lawyer and notary Franz Ludwig Schmidt-Knatz, who had proven himself as a member of the board of trustees of the Foundation for the Blind Institution in June 1965. He held the presidency from May 12, 1966 to April 26, 1996, longer than anyone before. By virtue of his office, Schmidt-Katz was responsible for all management committees of the polytechnic subsidiary institutes. Among other things, he worked as chairman of the board of trustees of the Foundation for the Blind, the board of the association for the care of chamber music, the administrative committee of the Wöhlerstiftung and the institute for apiculture, as well as a simple board member of the arts and crafts association and the Kuratorium Kulturelles Frankfurt.

The board of directors of Frankfurter Sparkasse 1822 elected Schmidt-Knatz as its new chairman in February 1974, which is the first time in the history of Frankfurter Sparkasse that the incumbent president of the Polytechnic Society has held both positions in personal union. After the merger of Frankfurter Sparkasse with Stadtsparkasse Frankfurt in 1989, Schmidt-Knatz shared the chairmanship of the board of directors with city treasurer Ernst Gerhardt until 1994 . His successor as President of the Polytechnic Society, Hans-Jürgen Hellwig, honored Schmidt-Knatz in his inaugural address on April 26, 1996 with the statement "Franz Schmidt-Knatz de Societate Polytechnica bene meritus" (Franz Schmidt-Knatz has rendered outstanding services to the Polytechnic Society made). At the suggestion of the select committee, the general assembly elected Schmidt-Knatz as an honorary member and placed him in line with August Anton Wöhler or Kurt Blaum.

Schmidt-Knatz has received numerous awards for his voluntary work. The city of Frankfurt am Main awarded him the plaque of honor in 1984. Schmidt-Knatz was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Honorary Senator of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in 1980.
