Karl Julius Herbert Viktor vom Rath (born March 2, 1915 in Cologne ; † May 16, 1986 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German art historian and head of cultural affairs in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Studying art history, German, philosophy and psychology in Cologne , Berlin and Bonn was followed by a doctorate in 1938. In 1941/42 he received a scholarship at the German Art History Institute in Florence . In 1942 he was an assistant at the German Art History Institute in Paris . From 1945 to 1948 he headed the art collection at Schloss Dyck . He then worked as a cultural advisor and government councilor in the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Culture . At the end of September 1950 he was elected head of culture by the Frankfurt city council. He held this city council post until he left the magistrate in 1970.

During his term of office, the reconstruction of numerous cultural institutions in Frankfurt, which had been destroyed in the air raids in World War II. These include the Frankfurt Opera , which opened in the former theater in 1951 , and the twin city ​​theaters that opened in 1963 at the same location . Vom Rath pushed through its construction against resistance, for example against the design of the foyer with the gold clouds created by Zoltan Kemeny . Vom Rath appointed Artistic Director Harry Buckwitz and General Music Director Georg Solti to the Städtische Bühnen.

Other reconstruction projects during his term of office included the Goethe House (1951), the Holzhausenschlösschen as the seat of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History (1953), the Stone House , seat of the Frankfurter Kunstverein (1962), the Willemer House (1964) and the museum for handicrafts in the former Villa Metzler (1965).

The Liebieghaus , the Städel and the Senckenberg Museum were renovated and expanded during his tenure. In 1956 the municipal theater opened in the tower in the former education center at Eschenheimer Tor . In 1959 the new building of the German library was opened at the Bockenheimer Warte . In the same year the city ​​archive moved into its rooms in the former Carmelite monastery .

In 1965 vom Rath was awarded the plaque of honor of the city of Frankfurt am Main . In 1971 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . From 1960 to 1971 he was chairman of the Frankfurt Association for History and Regional Studies , and from 1961 to 1972 a member of the advisory board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .
