history

The square is named after the Bockenheimer Warte , built in 1434–35 , one of the four surviving towers of the Frankfurter Landwehr , which guarded the border crossing of the old trade route towards Cologne here on the Frankfurt side. The watch tower stands in the middle of the square.

Immediately west of the tower, on the Bockenheimer side of the square, the state border ran until 1866 between the Free Imperial City or Free City of Frankfurt on the one hand and Bockenheim on the other hand, which until 1736 became the County of Hanau , then to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel , later the Electorate of Hesse , belonged to. The former imperial city section of this street is now called Bockenheimer Landstrasse , the former Kurhessische is now the main shopping street of Bockenheim under the name Leipziger Strasse (until the incorporation: Frankfurter Strasse ).

The Frankfurter Alleenring runs across the eastern end of the square and is called Senckenberganlage to the south and Zeppelinallee to the north . On the Bockenheim side, the busy Adalbertstrasse – Gräfstrasse crosses the square. Here the line 16 of the Frankfurt tram runs .

On the southern side is the former main campus of the university with the main building, cafeteria , a student residence and the former Juridicum, the seat of the university administration. A large daily book market took place between the entrance to the campus and the watch tower. On the north side of the square is the university library , built from 1959 to 1964 based on a design by the architect Ferdinand Kramer . There is also the Bockenheimer Depot , a former depot and main workshop of the Frankfurt tram, which has been used for cultural purposes since it was closed in 1978 and is now the theater of the Frankfurt City Theaters .

Until the 1960s, Bockenheimer Landstrasse led past the watch tower to the south. Due to the structural changes in the surrounding area and the closure of the tram depot, the street was relocated to the north side of the control room in the 1970s. The weekly market in the Westend and Bockenheim districts is held on Thursdays on the current square between the university buildings and the waiting tower .

traffic

Under the square is the Bockenheimer Warte underground station , which consists of a large pedestrian level and two stations below. The underground lines C (under Bockenheimer Landstrasse and Leipziger Strasse, lines U6 and U7) and D (under Senckenberganlage, line U4) cross here in a tower station .
