Karl Goebels (born August 19, 1901 in Hanau ; † November 14, 1991 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Protestant theologian and member of the Confessing Church .

Life

After studying Protestant theology in Bethel , Marburg and Tübingen and subsequent ordination, Goebels initially worked from 1926 to 1928 as an assistant pastor in the Emmaus community in the Frankfurt district of Eschersheim . From 1928 to 1936 he was the second pastor at the Frankfurt Deaconess Mother House . Goebels had been a member of the Confessing Church since 1934 and thus entered the church fight against the German Christians .

From October 1, 1936 to 1950, Goebels was pastor of the Mariengemeinde in Frankfurt-Seckbach . Goebels made a name for himself in Seckbach through his initiatives for the reconstruction of the baroque St. Mary's Church, which was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in 1944 . He justifies the church spire that was changed after the reconstruction:

“We do not want to appear as though nothing has happened when we restore the old form of the church. A new form is to testify that the old has been broken, that the Lord is alive and active in our generation in the grace of his visitation. "

- Karl Goebels : Way and Truth, December 16, 1951

After the war ended in 1945 he was chairman of the provisional leadership of the Evangelical Church in Frankfurt until 1947. In 1950 the Church Synod elected him provost for Frankfurt , an office that he held until he retired in 1970.

During his term of office the reorganization of the parishes after the end of the war and the rebuilding of the destroyed Frankfurt churches and parish halls fell. Many Frankfurt parishes will remember Goebels for his services.

Goebels was chairman of the Evangelical Alliance , the Evangelical Mission Association (today: Evangelical Missionswerk in Germany ) and the Frankfurt Bible Society . He devoted himself to developing youth work and adult education, and in the 1960s he increasingly turned to church-run development aid.

In 1980 Goebels was the patron of the 1100th anniversary of the Seckbach district of Frankfurt. In the foreword to the Festschrift he states:

“… The offer of an ecumenical service (is) set a double sign: a sign of remembrance that the thousand-year history… is more or less clearly shaped by the spirit of Christian culture; and a sign that points to the future: even in uncertain times, citizens also have support and hope, if they respect the eternal foundation that sustains our lives. "

Honors

In 1961 Goebels received the plaque of honor from the city of Frankfurt am Main . He was awarded the Roman plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main in gold for more than 20 years of voluntary work and the silver bowl of the city of Frankfurt am Main .

In Seckbach the Propst-Goebels-Weg is named after him, which leads through the Huthpark along the property of the Protestant Seckbacher Mariengemeinde.
