Rudolf Schäfer (historian)

Rudolf Schäfer (born February 4, 1914 in Höchst am Main ; † July 17, 1985 ibid) was a Frankfurt journalist, historian and local researcher. His scientific work focused in particular on the history of the city of Höchst am Main, and since 1928 the Frankfurt district of Höchst .

Life

After primary school, Schäfer attended the Stella Matutina Jesuit boarding school in Feldkirch for seven years . He passed his Abitur in 1934 at the Reform High School in Höchst. Schäfer then completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller between 1934 and 1936. After his military service he took up work as an accountant at the Frankfurt Societätsdruckerei . In 1939 Schäfer was drafted into the Wehrmacht, and in 1946 he returned to Höchst from captivity.

Between 1946 and 1949 Schäfer was a member of the editorial team of Frankfurter Hefte . At the same time, he initiated the re-establishment of the Höchst Porcelain Manufactory in 1947 . From 1949 to 1950 he was editor-in-chief and co-editor of the Höchst Anzeiger . After the advertisement was sold , Schäfer worked freelance for various newspapers and magazines. Eugen Kogon commissioned him in 1950 to do the preparatory work for a historical magazine, while Schäfer studied history, German and art history for two semesters at the University of Frankfurt .

This was followed by two years of activity as a journalist and publisher, and between 1954 and 1963 Schäfer was twice managing director of the Federation for Popular Education in Frankfurt am Main Höchst . In addition, he completed a further six semesters of study at Frankfurt University. In 1967 he received his doctorate after submitting his dissertation in Mainz. From 1958 Schäfer worked with interruptions at S. Fischer Verlag , initially as a proofreader , later as an editor until his retirement. After that, Schäfer devoted himself entirely to his research work on Frankfurt-Höchst in addition to his position as city ​​district chairman, which he took up from 1977 until his death in 1985.

Since the 1950s Schäfer wrote numerous political and historical articles for various newspapers and magazines; from 1957 he published the Höchst castle booklet with articles on the history of the country about Höchst. Since 1961, many of his works have been published as single volumes in the Höchst Geschichtshefte , a series of journals published by the Association for History and Antiquity . He has also published a dialect dictionary ( Von de Aal up to de Zwiwwele ) and two plays in dialect.
