Werner Holzer (born October 21, 1926 in Zweibrücken ; † November 14, 2016 ) was a German journalist and publicist . From 1973 to 1991 he was editor-in-chief of the Frankfurter Rundschau .
Life
Werner Holzer served as a soldier in World War II . He was badly wounded; he owes his survival to a Russian soldier. He passed his Abitur examination in Bavaria and then studied history , philosophy and newspaper studies in Munich .
Holzer began his journalistic career as an editor at Mannheimer Morgen . He then switched to the magazine Der Ruf - Independent Papers of the Younger Generation - as head of service . From 1948/49 he worked in Munich for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Abendzeitung . From 1950 to 1953, Holzer was involved in setting up an article service across the USA. He then moved to the Frankfurter Rundschau , where he worked as head of the service until 1964. Holzer then worked as a special correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Frankfurter Rundschau and the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger .
Reporting from the Third World was a focus of his journalistic activities . In his reports from Africa, Southeast Asia and the USA he reported on the relationship between industrialized and developing countries, the effects of the colonial era and racial conflicts.
In 1973 he took over the editor-in-chief from the late publisher and editor of the Frankfurter Rundschau , Karl Gerold . Under his leadership, the circulation rose from 150,000 to 200,000 copies. He retired on January 1, 1992, but remained associated with the newspaper as an author and consultant. His successor as editor-in-chief was Roderich Reifenrath .
Holzer also worked as an author, presenter and commentator for radio and television. At the beginning of 1993 he hosted a news show on the private television station VOX together with the former foreign correspondent for Stern magazine , Wibke Bruhns .
