Philipp Mohler

Philipp Heinrich Mohler (born November 26, 1908 in Kaiserslautern , † September 11, 1982 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German composer. From 1958 to 1976 he was director of the Frankfurt University of Music. M.

Life

Mohler studied at the Academy of Music in Munich with Joseph Haas, among others . In 1928 he became a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Aenania Munich . After teaching and conducting positions in Munich, Nuremberg and Landau, he became a teacher of composition and conducting at the Stuttgart University of Music in 1940, succeeding Hugo Distler . From 1943 he held a professorship there. In 1958 he was appointed director of the Frankfurt University of Music , which he headed until 1976 (at the same time the Hoch Conservatory until 1973 ).

In addition to orchestral and chamber music, Mohler's creative focus was on vocal music, where he also composed songs, choirs and cantatas for young people and amateurs.

In addition to his teacher Joseph Haas, Paul Hindemith was also influential in Mohler's style .

Honors

Mohler received a number of awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1968), the Great Cross of Merit (1974), the Goethe Plaque of the State of Hesse (1975) and the Peter Cornelius Plaque of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate (1976). The Palatinate Choir Association awards him a Philipp Mohler Medal in his honor .
