Julius Wagner (born March 21, 1886 in Heldra , Eschwege district ; † November 6, 1970 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German geographer and educator .

Life

Family and education

The Evangelical baptized Julius Wagner, son of the farmer Johann Wagner, completed after his training as a primary school teacher , the school teacher exam. He then turned to studying geography, physics , chemistry , psychology and education at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and the University of Frankfurt , where he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . In the following year he passed the state examination in the subjects geography, physics and chemistry, in addition he completed the examination for the teaching post at the secondary school.

Julius Wagner married Irmgard nee Brinkmann in 1924. He died in November 1970 at the age of 84 in Frankfurt am Main.

Professional background

During his professional training, Wagner was employed as a primary school teacher at various locations in Hesse . In 1920 he accepted a study council office at the Helmholtz secondary school in Frankfurt. In addition , Wagner, who was later promoted to senior studies director , worked as a psychologist and teacher for various training institutions, for example from 1921 to 1930 as a lecturer for youth studies at the University of Frankfurt. In 1948 Julius Wagner received a professorship at the Pedagogical Institute in Weilburg , in 1951 he was appointed honorary professor of economic geography at the University of Frankfurt, and in 1964 he resigned from this position. At the same time and in the same rooms he taught at the Academy for World Trade (AfW) founded in 1950. There he was responsible for foreign studies in the specialist course.

Wagner's commitment was in particular to scientific associations and magazines. In 1947 he was one of the re-founders of the Frankfurter Geographische Gesellschaft , whose chairmanship was entrusted to him. In 1949 Wagner founded the Geographische Rundschau , of which he was its editor until 1960. Also in 1949 he was involved in the re-establishment of the Association of German School Geographers , which he chaired until 1960. He was then appointed honorary chairman .

Julius Wagner, the 1959 honorary member of the Geographical Society of Luebeck , 1961 corresponding member of the Society Austrian Geographical elected, his service was awarded in recognition of the school geography 1958, the city of Frankfurt am Main award plaque , 1961, the Goethe Medal of the State of Hesse and awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
