Frankfurt Geographical Society
The Frankfurter Geographische Gesellschaft is a non-profit, scientific association for the dissemination and promotion of geographical knowledge .
The Frankfurter Geographische Gesellschaft was founded on December 9, 1836 as the "Geographischer Verein zu Frankfurt am Main" by the bourgeoisie of the city of Frankfurt am Main on the initiative of the geographer Carl Ritter . It is the second oldest geographic society in Germany; After the Société de Géographie in Paris, the Society for Geography in Berlin and the Royal Geographical Society in London, the Frankfurt Geographical Society is the fourth oldest such society in the world.
In 1854 it was renamed "Association for Geography and Statistics in Frankfurt am Main"; In 1961 the name was changed to “Frankfurter Geographische Gesellschaft e. V. ". Until at least 1987 the society awarded two medals, the Eduard Rüppell Medal and the August Ravenstein Medal.
The seat of the association is the Institute for Physical Geography at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . The association is the publisher of the Frankfurter Geographische Hefte.
Wilhelm Lutz has been honorary chairman since 2001 .
