Richard Kirn (journalist)

Richard Kirn (born April 9, 1905 in Worms , † December 29, 1979 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German newspaper journalist and author.

Life

Kirn began his journalistic career in 1927 as editor of the Wormser Volkszeitung , where he published his first diaries . In January 1934 he was a prisoner in the early Osthofen concentration camp . In 1946 he reported in the "New Mainzer Anzeiger", Worms edition, in several articles about the Nazi era in Worms and his experiences in this concentration camp. In 1934 he went to the Frankfurter General-Anzeiger (GA) as a sports reporter and in 1938 - together with Helmut Castagne - became head of the theater criticism department . In 1943, after the GA was discontinued due to the war, he switched to the Frankfurter Anzeiger . In 1945 Emil Carlebach brought him to the Frankfurter Rundschau as an employee . Since Kirn was not considered completely unencumbered, under pressure from the American military government in 1946 he had to go to the Frankfurter Neue Presse (FNP), where he became an editor for sports and local issues. From 1946 to 1982 he was the head of the local editorial department and at times deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper. He also wrote literary and theater reviews.

He became known for his glossary Leberecht , which first appeared on April 20, 1951 and in which he anecdotally described local events. Associated with it was an annual collection for the needy. In 1963 the Leberecht Foundation was brought into being, which called for a collection for disabled children in the newspaper before Christmas. Kirn has written numerous sports books, novels and a screenplay ( The Big Game , 1941).

In the 1970s he wrote Richard Kirn's STENOGRAMS column in the kicker sports magazine .

Richard-Kirn-Straße in Worms is named after him.
