Wilhelm Bender (born August 3, 1944 in Kirberg , today a district of Hünstelden , Limburg-Weilburg district ) is a German manager. From January 1993 to August 2009 he was CEO of Fraport AG, the operating company of Frankfurt Airport .

Life

After graduating from the humanistic Heinrich-von-Gagern-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main , he began studying law and economics at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . This was followed by the doctorate to Dr. iur. at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

From 1974 to 1984 Bender worked in various functions at what was then Deutsche Bundesbahn and then until 1990 managing director of the industry association “ Verkehrsforum Bahn ”. From 1990 he occupied positions as chairman of the management of the major forwarding company Schenker , member of the board of directors of Schenker-Rhenus AG and chairman of the board of directors of Schenker Waggon- und Beteiligungs AG. From January 1993 he was CEO of Fraport AG. In 2008 he was awarded the title of honorary professor by the University of Frankfurt. Wilhelm Bender retired on September 1st, 2009 at the age of 65. Stefan Schulte succeeded him as Fraport CEO .

Fields of activity

In his position as CEO of the Fraport Group, Bender was in charge of the Aviation, Ground Handling, Retail & Properties and External Activities business areas. The strategic ground handling services division, the central divisions of marketing, strategy, committees, corporate communications, central purchasing and building contracting as well as auditing were directly subordinate to him.

In 2001, Bender floated Frankfurt Airport on the stock exchange . He pushed the internationalization of the company and the expansion of the airport.

Wilhelm Bender has been working as Senior Adviser for the private equity company Advent International since November 2009 . He will advise Advent on businesses that involve industry and service companies. In March 2010, Bender was elected to the Advisory Board of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) . Bender is supposed to support the bank in its activities in Germany. Bender knows Germany like no other and is a real asset thanks to his experience and his regional and international networks.

On June 30, 2010, Wilhelm Bender was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG.

In July 2010 he was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bombardier Transportation (Bahn) in Germany. In February 2016, Wolfgang Tölsner was elected as his successor.

In 2013 it became known that Bender was offered the successor as managing director of Berlin Brandenburg Airport . Bender declined, but offered to be available to advise the airport. In the end, Bender also refused the envisaged role as a consultant when his fee was publicly disputed and confidential discussions became known.
