The Erich Becker Foundation was until its dissolution March 31, 2016, a German foundation , based in Frankfurt am Main . The purpose of the foundation was to promote science and research. The purpose of the foundation was achieved in particular by promoting scientific work in the field of air transport, logistics and mobility by awarding scholarships. It was named after Erich Becker (1920–2003), who was Fraport's CEO from 1972–1988 .

The purpose of the foundation

Scholarships were awarded to individuals who studied aviation-related topics at universities in Germany and abroad as part of

  • Diploma or similar scientific work (master's thesis),
  • Dissertations,
  • Habilitation theses

edited or planned such a project.

Scholarships for diploma or similar scientific work could be granted up to a maximum of 3,000 €. Dissertations could be funded with up to 15,000 €, habilitation theses with up to 18,000 €.

Funds amounting to approx. € 100,000 from the income of the foundation's assets were available annually for scholarships.

History of the foundation

Flughafen Frankfurt Main AG - today's Fraport AG - set up the Flughafen Frankfurt Main Foundation in 1986 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the airport on the initiative of its then CEO, Erich Becker, and endowed it with assets of DM 3 million . In order to express gratitude and appreciation to the initiator of the foundation, who died in 2003, for his forward-looking decision and to honor his achievements in the long term, the foundation was named "Erich-Becker-Stiftung - A foundation of Fraport AG for the promotion of science and Research".

From the start of funding activities in 1988 until they were terminated in 2016, the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Research in the Field of Aviation, including Mobility and Logistics, with a capital of € 1.53 million, has raised funds totaling € 2.87 million . € approved and € 2.77 million paid (as of 2014). The foundation thus reached more than 130 domestic and foreign universities with its funding activities.

The scientific work funded by the foundation until its dissolution:

  • 233 dissertations,
  • 765 diploma or similar theses and
  • 93 other projects, including 12 habilitations.

The Erich Becker Foundation was a signatory of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative.
