Erich Becker (Manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erich Becker (born March 20, 1920 in Grünstadt ; † January 9, 2003 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German civil engineer and manager. From 1972 to the end of 1988 he was CEO of Flughafen Frankfurt / Main AG (today: Fraport ).

Life

Becker was employed as a radio operator in the Air Force during the Second World War . After the war he studied part-time at the Mainz State Building School. From 1950 he was construction manager at Adam Opel AG in Rüsselsheim , where he stayed until 1958. In 1959 he moved to Volkswagen AG as a senior civil engineer , where he planned and managed the establishment of the Kassel site .

In January 1969 the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Frankfurt / Main AG appointed Becker as a member of the Management Board. There he was initially responsible for construction planning and management, the area of responsibility was later expanded to include airport technology. In 1972 Becker was appointed chairman of the board. However, the appointment met with considerable resistance within the Hessian state government . Heinz-Herbert Karry ( FDP ), Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister in the social-liberal coalition , spoke out in favor of a financial expert at the top. Becker was, however, pushed through by Rudi Arndt ( SPD ), then Finance Minister and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen AG , whereupon Karry resigned his position on the board.

Becker managed to bring the loss-making company into the profit zone within four years, although the Supervisory Board had planned profits to be around 1990 at the earliest.

In 1973/74 he introduced a new system for landing fees at Frankfurt Airport and in the following two years paid a total of around 2.5 million marks as bonuses to airlines that had modified their aircraft with environmentally friendly engines. The Federal Ministry of Transport finally adopted this model in 1975 as a model for a similar system, "so that it does not appear as if the Transport Minister and the other airports are imitating our idea" (Becker).

In Becker's era, the socially very controversial construction of the West Runway , which went into operation in April 1984 after more than ten years of planning and construction, also fell. During construction, an explosives attack was carried out on Becker's house in June 1983. At the end of 1988 he retired from the position of CEO. His successor was Horstmar Stauber .

Awards

In August 1980 Erich Becker was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit . After Becker's death, the Fraport Foundation, established in 1986, was renamed the Erich Becker Foundation in recognition of his services .
