Life

In 1912 Pfeifer moved to Fechenheim am Main , where he worked as an industrial clerk at Cassella for 30 years . During this time he continued his self-taught education. He was co-founder in 1924 of the ornithological observation station Untermain and 1937 the Vogelschutzwarte Frankfurt. In 1944 he was appointed director and scientific director of this state bird sanctuary for Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland . After the war, he began rebuilding in 1945. From 1952 he conducted a large-scale experiment to increase the population density of free- or cave-breeding bird species for biological pest control , in which he was supported by the natural scientist Werner Keil . In 1954 he founded the International Union for Applied Ornithology . After his retirement in 1964, Pfeifer was appointed President of the German Association for Bird Protection in 1966 (until 1969) , which has now moved its headquarters from Giengen to Frankfurt. Werner Keil was his successor at the bird sanctuary. In addition to the internationally acclaimed studies on increasing the population density of birds, Pfeifer also developed methods to ward off damage caused by birds with the help of acoustic measures, e.g. B. in vineyards. In addition, he dealt with the avoidance of accidents caused by bird flight in the area of the large Frankfurt Rhein-Main airport , which is under a route of the crane train.

Pfeifer was a valued lecturer and his guided tours in the great outdoors were very popular. A total of around 300 publications come from him in book form or in specialist journals and in the press.
