Rudolf Karl Theodor Drost (born August 19, 1892 in Oldenburg , † December 3, 1971 in Wilhelmshaven ) was a German ornithologist .

Rudolf Drost was the son of a secondary school teacher in Oldenburg. He studied in Tübingen and Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1923. In 1924 he became custodian of the State Biological Institute on Helgoland, in 1926 head of the Helgoland ornithological station , and in 1932 professor. After the war destruction on Heligoland, in September, with the help of the British occupation troops, he succeeded in bringing the bomb-proof institute material (bird collection, library, documents from the recovered birds of ringed birds, etc.) to the mainland. In contrast to the formerly responsible Schleswig-Holstein, the then province of Hanover declared itself ready to accept the institute with its seat in Wilhelmshaven by decree of January 1946 . Today's name: Institute for Bird Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland".

Rudolf Drost published numerous works in the field of bird migration research and was editor of the magazines "Der Vogelzug" (since 1930) and "Vogelwarte".
