Herbert Bruns

Herbert Bruns (born July 11, 1920 in Wilhelmshaven ; † February 27, 1998 ) was a German biologist and environmentalist.

Life

Bruns already dealt with ornithology in his school days and temporarily looked after the island of Mellum protected area . After graduating from high school, he worked as a bird warden on Wangerooge in 1939 .

After the war he studied biology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . During this time of scarcity of funds, he supported the analysis of large-scale bird populations and long-term studies through publications in periodicals . In 1948 he founded the journal Ornithologische Mitteilungen , which made it possible to quickly disseminate information about field ornithological events and results. From 1949 to 1951, together with Dr. Ornithological treatises published by Otto Niebuhr changed both of them to biological treatises so that topics other than purely ornithological topics could be published.

In 1950 Bruns received his doctorate in Göttingen . As an assistant at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (1951 to 1956) he examined the possibilities of biological control of insect calamities with the help of cave breeders. In this context, he was able to publish the results of a study on chemical pesticides and their potential side effects on birds and insects.

In Hamburg he worked from 1956 to 1962 as scientific director of the state bird protection. During this time he began using his own research to differentiate between the advantages of wood-concrete nesting boxes over other nesting devices for native songbirds. From 1961 to 1986 Bruns published six volumes of Applied Ornithology , the journal of the International Union for Applied Ornithology. Bruns was elected its president in 1962.

His ecological orientation came to light in 1964 with his magazine Das Leben open, which he later renamed Life and Environment (last published in 1995). His intention to introduce the internationally common approach of bioprotection ("protection of life, protection de la vie") into the discussion about the goals of environmental protection in Germany attracted attention . In 1965 he founded the Bund für Lebensschutz e. V. and directed it. Before that, he was managing director of the German section of the World Association for the Protection of Life for several years .

Bernhard Grzimek won him over to work on Grzimek's animal life . In this series he was head of the Institute for Biology and Protection of Life / Schlangenbad . With basic ecological work and advice, he participated in the political work of citizens' initiatives and nature conservation organizations against the construction of a high-rise complex "Atlantis" in Westerland on Sylt . In the course of this commitment, which reached up to the top of the state government, he did not shy away from a fundamental socio-political discussion about “democracy and conscience”.

From 1972 to 1980 Bruns taught as a professor at the Pedagogical University of Berlin and then until his retirement in 1985 at the Technical University of Berlin . Nature conservation issues remained a central concern of his research and teaching. On-site nature conservation - again with the aim of further research - he realized with his "Biological Station" near List with considerable own resources, with the participation of students and the use of community service providers. For students as well as for beginners and advanced hobby ornithologists he conducted coastal and sea bird courses on Sylt , during the course of which he included the course participants' encounters with the country and its people.

In his publications he offered a combination of scientific papers and popular articles: for example, he wanted to address bird lovers, amateur ornithologists and specialist scientists together in avifauna studies. His wife Margarete Bruns played a major role in the organization of his publication work by taking over the publishing business for him (e.g. "Biologie-Verlag").

From April 27, 1973, he and Dr. Ulrich Brand and the first chairman Hans-Helmuth Wüstenhagen joined the executive committee of the Federal Association of Citizens' Initiatives Environmental Protection BBU. Escalating differences with Wüstenhagen, which partly affected the self-image of the citizens 'initiative umbrella organization in the area of tension between ostensible environmental protection and overriding, integrative life protection, led in November 1973 with four other members of the 13-member board to leave the BBU including the citizens' initiatives they represented especially in the Bund für Lebensschutz . The competition that arose with the rapidly growing BBU, however, was not very effective.

Especially in his opposition to the expansion of atomic energy, Bruns, as a representative of several associations, was in lively exchange with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, especially under Genscher and Maihofer, and advocated the creation of an independent environment ministry with sufficient competence in ecological issues. Immediately after Hartmut Gründler's self-immolation, he published a chronological collection of the most important correspondence of his comrade-in-arms and temporary BBU board colleague.
