Peter Kuhlemann (born March 16, 1913 in Nordhausen ; † July 24, 2005 in Westerland ) was a German zoologist and author.

Live and act

Kuhlemann studied zoology in Berlin and Munich . On Heligoland , he acquired in- depth knowledge of seabird life as an employee of the local ornithological station , especially at the Wangerooge and Scharhörn outstations . From 1935 he and Knud Ahlborn ensured that the Kampener Vogelkoje was used as the first “information center on Sylt ”. In 1938, the Scharhörn Sea Bird Sanctuary was founded thanks to his Robinson life on the uninhabited, newly created North Sea island. At the same time, he worked on Heinroth's bird song recordings on records in the wild ( feathered master singers ). He then led a two-month expedition to take stock of reptiles in the North African coastal area of Libya with manifold yields for the Bavarian State Zoological Collections .

The Second World War , which Kuhlemann participated in the navy , interrupted a prepared venture to South Africa . After an attempt to escape from captivity, he did not return to Germany until 1949. All zoological and literary records and collections, like his house, were no longer available; as a fur farmer he created a new existence in Schleswig-Holstein.

The federal state association for bird protection appointed him in 1952 as head of the planned bird protection and wildlife protection research station in Neumünster . As one of the TV pioneers - even before Professor Bernhard Grzimek - he made animal films and from 1953 presented his TV zoo series from Hamburg : " What do you know about animals - let's go to Hagenbeck "; this television series comprised 31 episodes. The NDR honored him with a television award for making a stork film. He continued to actively campaign for animal welfare . He was responsible for a major part of the planning work for the conversion of the NS water port for seaplane bombers Rantum into one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Germany, the Rantum Basin .

In 1973, Kuhlemann was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to nature conservation. Experts appreciated his opinion and advice because of his diverse and practical commitment. Biology students and hobby ornithologists, who were taken to Kuhlemann by Professor Herbert Bruns during their excursions to Sylt, received information from him about his current observations and ecological assessments of nature and animal protection. Together with other initiators, he was pleased that their work for a Wadden Sea National Park was successful.

In 2002 he brought out the book The Birds of Our Home as a revised version of his publications from 1958 and 1966. With the presentation of an honorary certificate, Kuhlemann was welcomed as an honorary board member by chairman Wolfram Hartwich in 2004 in recognition of his active participation in the state animal protection association . At the age of 91 he was still giving lectures and published the book Living with Animals . With creative urge and willpower, he was also active as a respected writer, archaeologist and painter.
