Klappholttal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Klappholttal ( Frisian (frasch): Klapholtdääl , Danish : Klapholtdal ) it originally referred to a dune valley north of Kampen on the North Sea - island of Sylt at a point where the island is about 1 km wide. Today there is the academy of the same name by the sea , the so-called Nordseeheim Klappholttal , a state-recognized adult education center as a home adult education center. The name Klappholttal comes from Frisian and literally means "Klappholz ‑ Tal". Klappholz is the "collapsed" by wind and weather, crooked growing, partly as a thicket impressive needle - undergrowth . It is decidedly picturesque and offers rich subject matter to artistic endeavors. The Kassel camp , the youth lake home of the Kassel district, is also nearby .

history

Overview map of the Sylt Inselbahn, Klappholttal stop is the penultimate one in the north

First development: As early as 1908, a shed was noted at the HP Klappholttal (stopping point of the Inselbahn ) (also in the actual Klappholttal, a little further south).

During the First World War , several remote positions and camps of the German military emerged in the Sylt coastal dunes . One of them was the Klappholttal camp . This camp served as quarters for soldiers of the island guard.

In the immediate post-war period, the so-called Free German Youth Camp Klappholttal on Sylt was built in 1919 in the abandoned but relatively well-preserved barracks under the direction of the Hamburg doctor Knud Ahlborn . This is where today's educational and recreation center developed. Until the construction of a road in 1970, the camp could only be reached on foot on dune paths or via the northern line of the Sylt Inselbahn built in 1907, and since 1958 via a paved footpath.

From 1971 to 1998, Dr. Manfred Wedemeyer founded the Volkshochschule Klappholttal , named Academy by the Sea since 1976 . The current head of the academy is Hartmut Schiller MA

Today there are numerous smaller houses integrated into the landscape in the 7.5 hectare dune area, which are used to accommodate guests or as event rooms. In addition to the Akademie am Meer, one of the oldest adult education centers in Schleswig-Holstein , the facility also includes a school campus . Until 2006 there was also a parent-child sanatorium . The institution is supported by the non-profit association Nordseeheim Klappholttal eV

As part of the celebrations to mark its 90th anniversary, Klappholttal received an award in Klappholttalia , a composition by the violist and composer Gunter Pretzel. The opus in four movements musically depicts the emotions of the Klappholttaler guests from arrival to departure and contains in the fourth movement a polyphonic choral movement, the actual Ode Klappholttalia . The premiere took place in August 2009 on site by the Debussy Trio Munich.

In 2019 the Volkshochschule Klappholttal celebrates its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the Akademie am Meer published the book "100 Years of Klappholttal auf Sylt", which was published in March 2019 by Husum Verlag .

nature

In the dunes near Klappholttal, an attempt was made between 1893 and 1914 to reforest a shifting dune with mountain pines to prevent sand drift. Even if this attempt was not crowned with great success, the remains of this plantation have been preserved to this day.
