State bird sanctuary for Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The state bird sanctuary for Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland - Institute for Applied Ornithology - is based in Frankfurt am Main , in the southeast of the city, on the edge of the Fechenheim Forest.

The basis of today's form of the bird sanctuary is an administrative agreement of the federal states of Hesse , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland as well as the city of Frankfurt from 1973. The technical supervision consists of a board of trustees made up of representatives of the 4 carriers. The official supervision lies with the competent Ministry of the State of Hesse.

The bird sanctuary is run by the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection , the Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture, Food, Viticulture and Forests of Rhineland-Palatinate , the Ministry for Environment and Consumer Protection (Saarland) and the City of Frankfurt am Main .

tasks

Examples of the diverse tasks of the bird sanctuary are:

  • Advice and preparation of opinions on aspects of bird protection . The current focus for some years now has been bird protection on overhead lines and the expansion of wind energy .
  • Compatibility of bird protection with the concerns of agriculture.
  • Advice to the population (e.g. young birds found in spring, care stations, nesting holes for woodpeckers in the facade insulation of buildings, bird droppings from birds that breed on buildings, winter feeding)
  • Environmental education , especially for schools and kindergartens in the city of Frankfurt. There are many exhibits of domestic birds available for this, as well as an extensive collection of feathers.
  • The bird sanctuary is the licensing authority for ringing wild birds in Hesse.

The bird sanctuary works with over 1,000 voluntary ornithologists , from whom district and local officers for bird protection are recruited, and various nature conservation associations such as NABU and HGON . Without this network of voluntary helpers, the bird sanctuary would not be able to perform many of its tasks to the given extent. The voluntary helpers are the eyes and ears of the state bird protection station .

history

On October 7, 1937, the "Südwestdeutsche Vogelschutzwarte eV" was founded in the Römer in Frankfurt, based in Rödelheim Castle . In 1938 the association went under the new name "State-recognized bird protection station Frankfurt am Main" in the sponsorship of the People's State of Hesse and the city of Frankfurt. After Rödelheim Castle fell victim to a bomb attack on March 22, 1944, the foundation stone was laid on April 14, 1948 for the bird sanctuary in Frankfurt-Fechenheim , Steinauer Strasse 44. It was moved into a year later on April 19th. In 1952, Rhineland-Palatinate and in 1957 Saarland took part in the sponsorship as federal states. In 1973 the owners of the ornithological protection institute established under the law of the association decided to dissolve it and to establish the "Ornithological Institute for Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland - Institute for Applied Ornithology" in Frankfurt am Main by the State of Hesse, affiliated to the Hessian State Institute for the Environment (today : Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology ). The state of Hesse took over the employees of the previous bird protection station in the state service as well as ownership of the buildings and properties. In 2009–2010 the buildings in Steinauer Strasse were completely renovated and partially rebuilt.
