Erich Welter (born June 30, 1900 in Strasbourg ; † June 10, 1982 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German publicist and economist.

life and work

Erich Welter studied law and political science from 1918 to 1922 and obtained his doctorate in 1925. rer. pole. The doctorate came so late because of a prolonged heart disease. From 1921 to 1932 he was the business editor of the Frankfurter Zeitung , from 1933 to 1934 editor-in-chief of the Vossische Zeitung in Berlin , which was closed on March 31, 1934 after 230 years under pressure from the National Socialists . From 1935 to 1943 he was again a member of the editorial board of the Frankfurter Zeitung , whose business section he was in charge of until the newspaper closed in 1943. Since he took over the deputy main editor of the newspaper for political reasons, he was particularly dependent on his skills in mediating with offices of the Reich authorities in personnel matters. During this time he came into contact with Rolf Rienhardt , with whom he was still in regular contact even after the war. From 1936 to 1944 he was also the chief editor of the Wirtschaftskurve .

Welter, who was an assessor at the Press Court in Berlin and belonged to the Academy for German Law , was employed in the planning office of the Reich Ministry for Armaments and War Production at the end of the war . He was also involved in the technical and organizational implementation of the Wehrmacht propaganda film Sieg im Westen .

In 1946 he founded the Deutsche Zeitung and Wirtschaftszeitung together with Curt E. Schwab in Stuttgart , but had to withdraw as a partner because the American occupation authorities classified him as incriminated. At the beginning of the 1950s he sued Schwab for withholding his shares in the newspaper, which he had been granted after complete discharge. Welter won the trial. On November 1, 1949, he was one of the founders of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung alongside Hans Baumgarten , Erich Dombrowski , Karl Korn and Paul Sethe and was its editor until 1980. From 1978 until his death, he chaired the shareholders' meeting. Although it was originally the five founding editors mentioned, only Welter is named as the same in the imprint today.

After completing his habilitation under Wilhelm Gerloff in Frankfurt in 1931, Welter became a private lecturer. In 1944 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Frankfurt . The appointment was made on the basis of the Reich Habilitation Ordinance of 1939, which stipulated that after a certain number of years as a private lecturer, an appointment as professor had to be made or the person had to be dismissed. By being appointed professor, Welter had no financial advantages or other perks. From 1948 until his retirement in 1962, he taught economics at the University of Mainz as a full professor . From 1951 he also headed the Research Institute for Economic Policy, which he co-founded, and edited the institute's publications. From 1953 to 1975 he was also a member of the Research Advisory Board for questions relating to the reunification of Germany at the Federal Ministry for Internal German Relations . From 1949 to 1971 he also worked for the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Transport.
