Ludwig Erhard Foundation
The Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung eV was founded in 1967 by former Chancellor Ludwig Erhard in Bonn as a non-profit organization.
Through publications, lectures and events, the association wants to serve “the further development and strengthening of the social market economy ”. According to its statutes, it has the task of promoting "liberal principles in politics and business through civic education and training work at home and abroad as well as through academic work in the field of business and regulatory policy".
The guiding principle of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation is “Freedom and responsibility as the foundation of an economic and social order for the responsible citizen ”. In this way, the foundation also counteracts political opportunism and conformism.
A scientific documentation center about Ludwig Erhard, his life and work enables contemporary Erhard research to access important sources.
In addition, the Ludwig Erhard Foundation offers a platform for regulatory debates. The goal here is a broad exchange of ideas.
According to the association's statutes, the budget is financed from the foundation's assets, through voluntary contributions and donations. There is no obligation to publish the annual financial statements and business report.

Other grants
The Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung is also a member of the Ludwig-Erhard-Preis initiative, which awards the Ludwig-Erhard-Preis , an award for top performance in competition to “entrepreneurs and institutions [...] who are not alone in their top position in international competition through technical and economic decisions, but above all by systematic customer orientation and partnership working atmosphere have earned. "
Furthermore, the Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung supports the Fürth Ludwig-Erhard-Preis , which honors doctoral theses at Franconian universities, "in which the factors innovation, practical relevance, feasibility, economic benefit and the effects on people in our society are taken into account" and which carry on the basic ideas of the social market economy in the spirit of Ludwig Erhard.
“In addition, the institution is an operational foundation that only supports third-party projects in very rare cases. It is also not possible to award scholarships. "
Scandal about awarding the award to Friedrich Merz
In 2018, Friedrich Merz rejected the Ludwig Erhard Prize awarded by the foundation. He justified this with the right-wing populist journalistic activities of the foundation's chairman, Roland Tichy. Four members of the jury, Rainer Hank , Ulric Papendick , Nikolaus Piper and Ursula Weidenfeld , took the incident as an opportunity to resign. They accused Tichy of making the foundation a “reputation machine” for his journalistic activities. They also criticized the fact that the deputy chairman Oswald Metzger had become office manager at Tichy. Other jury members, Thomas Mayer and Frank Schäffler , spoke out in favor of Tichy. Schäffler saw "within liberalism a rift between the supporters of the Merkel course and its opponents, be it in the euro rescue and now in the migration dispute".
