Wolfgang Ockenfels joined in 1967 the Congregation of the Dominicans at. In the early summer of 2016, he criticized the change in political values: "Anyone who has faithfully belonged to the CDU for fifty years, which then represented values ​​similar to those of the AfD today , is suspected of being senile or sentimental if he does not slowly consider leaving." He also condemned the demarcation course of Catholic bishops and other church representatives from the Alternative for Germany party as “careless defamation” and “unwillingness to deal seriously with the AfD program, which is not rationally understandable”. At the beginning of 2017 he affirmed: "In my personal, non-authoritative opinion - after a thorough reading of the AfD program - it is not unchristian to belong to this party or to vote for it."

In March 2018, the AfD- affiliated Desiderius Erasmus Foundation announced that it had appointed Wolfgang Ockenfels to the foundation's board of trustees. The Dominican Order and the Central Committee of German Catholics distanced themselves from Ockenfels' activities in the party-affiliated foundation .
