Walter Hamm

Walter Hamm (born November 30, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 16, 2017 ) was a German economist .

Hamm was born the son of a factory owner in Frankfurt. After four years of military service and captivity, he studied economics at the University of Frankfurt from 1946 to 1948 . After receiving his doctorate under Erich Welter in Frankfurt in 1952 , he went to the University of Mainz , where he worked from 1952 to 1961 as the deputy head of the Research Institute for Economic Policy and completed his habilitation in 1961. In 1963 he was appointed to the chair of economics at the University of Marburg , where he retired in 1988. From 1965 to 1991 Hamm was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Transport . From 1984 to 1997 he was also a member of the Kronberger Kreis . In 1988, Hamm received the Ludwig Erhard Prize for business journalism . He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Social Market Economy Action Group . From 1966 to 2002 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Fazit Foundation and from 1980 to 2002 its chairman. Until 2017, Hamm regularly wrote comments and analyzes for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . He was married and had two children.
