Michael Hirz

Michael Hirz (born March 4, 1952 in Neukirchen-Vluyn ) is a German journalist and moderator. From 2008 to 2018 he was program director of the television channel Phoenix .

biography

Hirz studied English, Spanish and political science in Cologne and Bonn . After completing his studies in 1977, he was briefly involved in setting up the scientific service of a foundation in Bonn before he switched to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger as a volunteer in October 1977 .

After a traineeship and brief editorial work, he went to Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln in 1981 , where he worked as deputy head of press and public relations . In 1988 he moved to the television editor-in-chief for politics. In addition to working for numerous ARD hotspots and special programs at home and abroad, he was involved in the development of numerous programs for Erste Deutsche Fernsehen and WDR-Fernsehen. From 1988 to 2008 he was also the editor of the ARD program Presseclub .

After managing several editorial offices in the domestic and international departments of the WDR, he took over the management of the television department for culture in the WDR in 1998. At the same time he kept the head of the press club editorial team. Also in 1998 he launched the PresseclubForum series of events , all-day symposia on fundamental questions of social and political development. He also often moderates the international morning pint .

In November 2007, the directors of ARD elected him program director of the television station Phoenix. Hirz performed this task from February 2008 to January 2018. Hirz moderated numerous programs and series for the station, e. B. Unter den Linden and in dialogue. His guests included u. a. Chancellor Angela Merkel, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, other top politicians and top representatives from business and culture, including Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. Michael Hirz has been working as a freelance journalist, moderator and media consultant since the beginning of 2018, at the end of his second term in office.

Michael Hirz has been appointed to numerous juries and advisory boards at various institutions. He is u. a. Member of the Board of Trustees of the Civis Media Foundation and member of the jury for the Gerd Ruge Prize. He also holds teaching positions in the field of politics / journalism, including a. at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Hirz is a member of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation .
