Karl von Wogau (born July 18, 1941 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German lawyer and politician. From 1979 to 2009 he was a member of the CDU's European Parliament for Baden-Württemberg and a member of the board of the European People's Party . He has been General Secretary of the Kangaroo Group, a think tank and lobby organization based in Brussels, since 2010.

biography

After studying law and economics in Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich and Bonn , Wogau submitted a doctorate in legal history on the constitution of Upper Austria . In 1970 he received a business education at the Institut européen d'administration des affaires (INSEAD) in Fontainebleau and passed the second state examination in law. In 1971 he received a diploma from INSEAD. In 1973 he received his doctorate .

Von Wogau was a manager at Sandoz AG in Basel from 1971 to 1984 and then joined the Friedrich Graf von Westphalen law firm in Freiburg im Breisgau as a partner. From 1991 to 2010 he was a member of the district board of the CDU South Baden .

In 1979 Karl von Wogau became a member of the first directly elected European Parliament, of which he was a member until 2009.

In March 1984, together with his colleague Jacques Moreau, he presented a report on the creation of a European internal market . This report became the parliamentary trigger for the 1992 Internal Market program .

1994–1999 he was chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Industrial Policy. He was the European Parliament's rapporteur at the special session of the European Parliament on May 2, 1998 for the decision on the introduction of the euro.

From 2004–2009 he was chairman of the subcommittee on security and defense and a deputy member of the committee on foreign affairs, member of the delegation for relations with NATO and member of the European Parliament's special committee on access to sensitive information in the context of the European security and defense policy.

In 1979, together with Basil de Ferranti , Dieter Rogalla , Fernand Herman , Christiane Scrivener and Emile a Campo, he founded the Kangaroo Group, which is committed to the implementation of the European internal market, the stability of the European currency and a common foreign and defense policy of the European Union . Karl von Wogau has been General Secretary of the Kangaroo Group since 2010.

In 1996 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class , in 2001 the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and in 2002 the Order of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic.
