Dieter Rogalla (born August 20, 1927 in Weißwasser / Oberlausitz ; † January 8, 2013 in Sprockhövel ) was a German lawyer and SPD politician. He was a Member of the European Parliament ( MEP ) from 1981 to 1993 and then an Honorary Member of the European Parliament.

Professional and political career

Rogalla studied law in Münster and Valparaiso (Indiana) , USA , and was awarded a doctorate in 1977 at the University of Würzburg. jur. PhD. He was initially a civil servant in the Federal Customs Administration , then assistant in the Federal Ministry of Finance , from where he was sent to the EC Commission in Brussels in 1961 . From 1970 to 1981 he headed the service law department of the EC Commission.

On September 30, 1981, Rogalla came to the European Parliament as a so-called replacement for the SPD and was then directly elected in two European elections , in 1984 and 1989. As a member of the Committee for Economic Affairs, Currency and Industrial Policy, he was particularly committed to the realization of the internal market and the dismantling of internal borders in the European Community and was awarded the German Cross of Merit in 1994 for this.

In addition, from 1985 to 1991 he was teaching European studies at the Münster University of Applied Sciences . Rogalla worked as a lawyer with main focus European Law in his adopted hometown Sprockhövel operates. He had four children and six grandchildren who live in three different European capitals (Madrid, Paris and Rome ).

Special merits

As a politician, Rogalla has particularly campaigned for the dismantling of border controls within the European Community and has repeatedly drawn attention to this topic with special publicity campaigns. His bicycle tours across Europe, which he has organized annually for over 25 years and which earned him the name “Eurogalla”, were legendary. To this end, he invited young people from many countries and celebrities and knew how to draw attention to himself at each stage goal with a media-effective “finish”. The first tour took place in 1982 from Bochum to Strasbourg . He crossed the German-Dutch, German-Belgian and German-French border crossings several times. In the summer of 2007, when he was 80 years old, he set out on a 1500 km tour that took him from Plauen in Saxony to the Capitol in Rome, where the “ Treaty of Rome ” was signed 50 years ago . “Eurogalla”, who turned 80 that day, arrived in Rome on August 20, 2007, together with eleven “Europe-loving young people” from Germany. The 29th and last “Eurogalla Tour” was in the summer of 2010 under the sign of “25 Years of the Schengen Agreement” and led across the British Isles.
