Changes in Neoliberalism (2007)

content

In his dissertation, Plickert describes the emergence of neoliberalism in the development and charisma of the Mont Pelerin Society . In the first part, he traces the trends in liberalism from the 19th century to the First World War . Liberalism found its strongest counterpoint in the state interventionism of the world economic crisis, which it was only able to overcome after the Second World War . In the second part, the structure of the MPS as a scientific research institute and discussion forum is presented. The third part is devoted to the influence of neoliberal theories in the practical politics of the five most important economic nations of the West in the 1950s and 60s, whereby only ordoliberalism in West Germany took up and implemented the impulses. The fourth part deals with Margaret Thatcher's and Ronald Reagan's economic policy “turn of the tide” , which is understood as a largely consistent outflow of neoliberal thought.

Reviews

Michael von Prollius , management consultant and economic historian at the think tank Liberales Institut and, like Plickert himself, a member of the Friedrich A. von Hayek Society , sees Philip Plickert's history of ideas on neoliberalism as “the potential for a standard work”. Marcus M. Payk (working at the University of Stuttgart at the time of the review) judges that on the whole Plickert treats his subject with sympathy and in this way indicates his own regulatory preferences. The reviewer does not regard it as a coincidence that “the supervisor of the dissertation is chairman of the Action Group Social Market Economy , which has also subsidized the pressure of the work.” The history of ideas of liberalism, a history of economic theory formation and a history of intellectual forms of association. "Methodologically based on conventional lines, the study nevertheless convinces with an instructive combination of different levels of observation and different types of sources." Matthias Schmelzer points out in his book Freedom for Exchange Rates and Capital: The Origins of Neoliberal Monetary Policy and the Mont Pélerin Society that Plickert himself " Part of the MPS network ”and“ does not present a value-neutral analysis ”, but provides an“ uncritical ”presentation of the Mont Pelerin Society. In the NZZ, Gerd Habermann praises Plickert's monograph as a classic representation of the history of neoliberalism in the 20th century. It is a stroke of luck that the author is "not only a descriptive historian, but also a 'neoliberal' trained economist".

Book "Merkel: A Critical Balance" (2017)

In June 2017 - three months before the Bundestag election - Plickert published the anthology "Merkel: A Critical Balance" with contributions from 22 professors and journalists in FinanzBook Verlag. The authors are: Norbert Bolz , Werner J. Patzelt , Wolfgang Ockenfels , Ralf Georg Reuth , Birgit Kelle , Daniel Koerfer , Dominik Geppert , David Marsh , Henning Klodt , Stefan Kooths , Justus Haucap , Roland Tichy , Cora Stephan , Thilo Sarrazin , Michael Wolffsohn , Rafael Seligmann , Necla Kelek , Anthony Glees , Boris Kálnoky , Andreas Unterberger , Christopher Caldwell and Erich Vad .

The book mainly deals with Merkel's policy in the refugee crisis, her economic, European and energy policy and the left shift of the Union, but also covers international aspects. The book was on the “Spiegel” bestseller list for fourteen weeks. and was printed in a total of seven editions.

There have been numerous reviews and reports in the press. Susanne Gaschke wrote in the “Welt”, in the middle of the election campaign, well-known authors dared to settle accounts with the Chancellor. Eckhard Stuff praised Stuff on the cultural radio of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb): “Philip Plickert has succeeded in gathering knowledgeable critics of Merkel's politics. … Very readable. ”The“ taz ”criticized, however, that the book contained“ Merkel abhorrence ”.

In the "Allgemeine Zeitung" (Mainz), Jonas Hermann wrote: "Compared to the often weak wind criticism of Merkel, Plickert's book is a tornado that devastates mother's garden and should give Merkel allergy sufferers a boost for the next round of discussions" (Jonas Hermann: Broadside against the Chancellor, Allgemeine Zeitung, July 6, 2017). The newspaper “Luxemburger Wort” found the book “perky. It sets a counterpoint to the constant praise that Merkel receives mainly from the international press ”(Jochen Zehnthöfer, Merkel's silence is her weapon, Luxemburger Wort, August 19/20, 2017) Robert Michels found the book in the“ Rheinische Post ” “Strong stuff” and “very readable”. The “Nordwest-Zeitung” (Oldenburg) wrote that “Merkel myths would be thoroughly shattered”. The “Oberbayerische Volksblatt” wrote critically that it was “a stimulating book with a clear agenda. It means: Merkel has to go ”. On the other hand, the head of the foreign affairs department, Peter Rásonyi, praised the fact that “many contradictions and weaknesses (Merkel's) were uncovered” and the book was “very readable”.
