Erich Vad

Erich Vad (born January 2, 1957 in Arnsberg ) is retired Brigadier General . D. the armed forces , management consultant and lecturer at universities in Germany and abroad. From 2006 to 2013 he was group leader in the Federal Chancellery , secretary of the Federal Security Council and military policy advisor to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel .

Life

Military career

Training and first uses

Vad graduated from the old-language Görres-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf in 1975 and then joined the Bundeswehr as an officer candidate . From 1976 to 1979 he studied history at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich . Subsequently, from 1980 to 1987 he was employed in the 11th Panzer Reconnaissance Training Battalion in Munster, first as a platoon leader and then twice as a company commander. During this time Vad was doing his doctorate parallel to his service with the military historian Werner Hahlweg and the Israeli military historian Jehuda Wallach on the current importance of the military theorist Carl von Clausewitz . The dissertation ( Dr. phil. ) Was published in 1986. From 1987 onwards, Captain Vad was employed for a year at the US Army Armor School in Fort Knox , Kentucky .

Service as a staff officer

Back in Germany, he completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr (FüAkBw) in Hamburg from 1988 to 1990 and received the Clausewitz Medal upon graduation . After that he was promoted to major i. G. was promoted and from 1990 to 1992 was General Staff Officer for Logistics (Staff Department | G4) and Chief of Staff (G3) of Panzerbrigade 21 in Augustdorf under the command of Günter Hannstein . From 1992 to 1995 Vad was posted to Brussels, where he served as a staff officer in the NATO International Military Staff and in the General Secretariat of the WEU .

After this international assignment, Lieutenant Colonel i. G. Vad was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in 1995 , where he worked in Bonn and Berlin until 1999 in various presentations in the military policy department in the command staff of the armed forces (FüS III 6, 2, 1) under the chiefs of staff Benno Ertmann and Hartmut Moede served. During this time he was temporarily assigned to the United States Central Command , responsible for special operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina . In 1996 Vad published his book "Strategy and Security Policy - Perspectives in the Work of Carl Schmitt " in Westdeutscher Verlag . From 1999 to 2000, Vad was an arms control policy officer in the German Foreign Office .

Subsequently, Vad, who is a member of the CDU , was defense policy advisor for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in Berlin from 2001 to 2006 , where he met Angela Merkel, who was the group leader at the time . After Merkel's election as Federal Chancellor in 2005, Vad moved to the Federal Chancellery in 2006, where he worked as head of the military policy department until 2007.

In May 2007, Axel Binder was proposed by the Inspector General of the Federal Armed Forces , General Wolfgang Schneiderhan , for the key military-political post of group leader 22 in the Federal Chancellery. The group leader 22 works with the foreign policy advisor, Christoph Heusgen , who advises Chancellor Angela Merkel on all issues of security and defense policy. Schneiderhan's proposal was ignored, however, and Vad, who was favored by the CDU, was promoted to the post. He replaced Gerd Bischof on this post.

Service as a general

The original plan was to appoint Vad as Commander of the Verification Center on April 1, 2010 , to enable him to be promoted to Brigadier General. At Angela Merkel's request, however, he stayed in his post in the Chancellery and was finally promoted to Berlin on July 1, 2010. The last general on this post, which was basically intended for a colonel , served under Helmut Schmidt . On May 1, 2013, Vad retired . He was succeeded by Colonel Andreas Delp .

In politics

Erich Vad was chairman of the CDU Schwielowsee from 2001 to 2007 and also chairman of the CDU / FDP parliamentary group in the Schwielowsee municipal council . From 2009 to 2013 he was an assessor in the state board of the CDU Brandenburg . After moving to Munich, Erich Vad is a frequently requested speaker at the Hanns Seidel Foundation , the Junge Union Bayern and various CSU bodies and associations.

Others

From 1994 to 2001 Erich Vad was a member of the board of the Clausewitz Society . Since 2015 he has been a lecturer at the Geschwister Scholl Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and teaches international relations at the University of Salzburg .

Erich Vad has been a partner at the Swiss consultancy Hirzel.Neef.Schmid.Konsulenten in Zurich since 2018.

Private

Erich Vad is married and has three children.

Articles and lectures

He has published articles in various specialist journals such as the Journal for Foreign and Security Policy , the Austrian Military Journal , Strategy and Security and European Security , but also in daily newspapers and other publications such as Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Science & Security and Secession of the new right Institute for State Policy .

As an advisor to the CDU-CSU parliamentary group at the time, Erich Vad gave a lecture at the extreme right-wing Berlin fraternity Gothia in a series of lectures in which the former mayor of Berlin Eberhard Diepgen (CDU) and Federal Minister a. D. Egon Bahr (SPD) appeared as speakers.

In 2003 he gave a lecture on "Peacekeeping and Geopolitics in Carl Schmitt's Thinking" at the " Institute for State Policy " , which is considered the think tank of the New Right . On the occasion of the 70th anniversary, Erich Vad gave a lecture on the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto in spring 1943 in front of 300 participants at the European Congress of the Jewish Agency in Warsaw on November 5, 2013 .

Erich Vad gave a lecture in front of the Industrieclub von Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf on January 26, 2015 and was a lecturer at the American Johns Hopkins University and the National Defense University in Washington, DC on November 15, 2017 at the invitation of the Swiss Council of States Damian Müller (FDP) took part in a panel discussion with the Swiss Defense Minister Guy Parmelin and the Vice President of the Swiss Security Commission in Lucerne.
