The Berlin fraternity Gothia is a mandatory student union in Berlin . She is a member of the Association of German Burschenschaft corporations .

history

Gothia-Charlottenburg was founded on March 5, 1890 , initially as a free corps . As early as June 5, 1891, it changed into a free fraternity and in the following winter semester 1891/92 was accepted into the Niederwalder Deputy Convent as the umbrella organization of the technical fraternities. Later she joined the German fraternity with one of his successor associations. On January 24, 1877, Gothia-Berlin was established as a non-colored “Academic Stenographers Association Gabelsberger” for the scientific treatment of shorthand issues. In 1904 a public couleur was created (dark red-gold-blue, dark red velvet hat) and in 1912 the name was changed to “Academic Association Gothia”. In 1921 Gothia Berlin joined the General German Burschenbund and thus transformed itself into a fraternity. Both fraternities suspended around 1935 and disbanded in the course of the Gleichschaltung. After World War II in 1950, Gothia Charlottenburg first opened an active business at the TU Darmstadt, followed by a parallel active business in Berlin on January 7, 1951. Gothia Charlottenburg and the former ADB fraternity Gothia merged on October 10, 1951 to form the Berlin fraternity Gothia with the colors of Gothia Charlottenburg and the founding date of Gothia Berlin. The Darmstadt Gothia split in 1955 because of a dispute about the determination of the scale, the members who rejected the scale finally resigned on May 1, 1955 and shortly afterwards founded the still existing, non-beating and meanwhile mixed Darmstadt fraternity Gothia with other colors. The mensur-affirming members of the Darmstadt Gothia were taken over by the Berlin Gothia in 1966. From 1970 to 1976 Gothia was suspended and meanwhile only optional. In 2016, the Berlin fraternity Gothia was chairwoman of the German fraternity .

Events and alignment

Gothia offers its members a wide variety of events at “Burschenschaftlichen Evenings”. Representatives of the conservative to the extreme right such as Alfred Mechtersheimer , Erik Lehnert , Horst Mahler , Michael Paulwitz Jost Bauch and Hans-Thomas Tillschneider appeared several times . The former mayor of Berlin Eberhard Diepgen also spoke at Gothia as an old man of the Berlin fraternity Saravia . In his function as anti-Semitism officer, Daniel Alter spoke on February 12, 2014 in the house of the Berlin fraternity Gothia at a fraternity evening of the " Vereinigung Alter Fratschenschafter zu Berlin (VAB)", organized by the fraternity Gothia in cooperation with the Borussia Berlin choir : "Together on education against latent and open anti-Semitism". Even Peter Brandt , son of former Chancellor Willy Brandt, was a speaker. In 2005, the former Chancellery Minister Egon Bahr (SPD) gave a lecture at Gothia, which triggered internal party discussions in the SPD and led to a decision at the federal party congress that membership in a fraternity was incompatible with that of the SPD . This decision was later defused to the effect that only membership in a fraternity of the fraternity community is incompatible with membership in the SPD, and in 2014 it was expanded again to all member unions of the German fraternity.

Members of the Berlin AfD and the Identitarian Movement took part in a Gothia barbecue .

Fraternity house

The Gothenhaus is the Gothia liaison house in Berlin-Zehlendorf . The house is also called "brown Wolfsschanze in Zehlendorf".

In 2006 a “Small German Art Exhibition” with works by Georg Sluyterman von Langeweyde , Ernst von Dombrowski and Rudolf Warnecke was held in the fraternity house , which had previously been shown at the Danubia Munich fraternity . In the opinion of the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution , the organizer of such exhibitions "should be asked whether he considers National Socialism to be exemplary not only in artistic but also in political terms". The title of the exhibition have openly to the art exhibition Large German reference, the 1937 to 1944 at the Munich Haus der Deutschen Kunst , the Nazi Art presented. The Gothenhaus has been in regular use since April 7, 2015, the resumption of the events organized by Erik Lehnert with the title "State Political Salon" of the new-right Institute for State Policy .

Student connection

In 1981, the Berlin school association Iuvenis Gothia was founded from the Gothia environment, based in the Gothenhaus , of which Michael Buge was a member.

Association of Old Fraternity Members of Berlin (VAB)

The Association of Old Burschenschafter zu Berlin (VAB) is also based in the Gothenhaus .

Memberships

Gothia originally belonged to the Rheinischer Ring from 1920 to 1999 technical fraternities. Aktivitas was a member of the fraternity until November 2012 . Gothia maintains a friendship relationship with the Markomannia Greifswald fraternity.
