Axel Binder

Axel Georg Eduard Binder (born February 27, 1958 in Celle ) is a major general in the Army of the German Armed Forces and has been in command of the Strategic Reconnaissance Command in Grafschaft since January 2016 .

Military career

After graduating from high school , Binder joined the Bundeswehr as an officer candidate in 1978 . After training as an officer of the artillery , he took up the study of the economic and organizational sciences at the 1981 University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg and closed it in 1985 as a business graduate from. In the meantime he had been promoted to lieutenant in 1983 . From 1985 to 1987 he was a platoon leader and observation officer with the Panzerartilleriebataillon 95 in Munster . This was followed by a transfer to Lüneburg , where Binder served from 1987 to 1991 as an S2 officer (intelligence) and battery chief at the 85th Panzer Artillery Battalion. During this employment he was promoted to captain in 1989 .

In 1991 he was transferred to Oldenburg , where he served as a fire control officer in the 11th artillery regiment until 1993 . From 1993 to 1995 Binder completed the 36th general staff course at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg and was promoted to major in 1994 during this time . He was then transferred to Bonn, where he was employed from 1995 to 1997 in the Federal Ministry of Defense as a consultant for NATO policy matters.

In 1997 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and worked for one year as a G3 staff officer (operations) in the staff of Panzergrenadierbrigade 7 in Hamburg-Fischbek. During this assignment, Binder completed a foreign assignment within the framework of SFOR in Sarajevo and was deployed there in the 2nd contingent as a G5 staff officer (civil-military cooperation). Back in Germany, Binder took over command of the 95th Panzer Artillery Battalion in Munster from 1998 to 2000.

From 2000 to 2001 he was employed as a ministerial officer with the head of the planning staff in Berlin , at that time Wolfgang Schneiderhan . After being promoted to colonel in 2001, Binder took on the post of deputy head of the military policy department in the permanent representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels from 2001 to 2004 .

Back in Germany he was transferred to the 1st Panzer Division in Hanover , where Binder was deployed as Chief of Staff from 2004 to 2006 under the command of Major General Karl Ackermann and Wolf-Dieter Langheld . The second foreign assignment for Binder took place during this period. This time from January to July 2005 as a contingent leader of the 3rd German contingent Afghanistan as part of the ISAF in Kunduz and Faizabad . Meanwhile, he was also the commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team Kunduz and Regional Air Command North (IOC).

From 2006 to 2009, Binder was head of the Central Affairs Division in the Armed Forces Command Staff (FüS) in the Defense Ministry in Berlin.

In 2007, Binder was proposed by General Wolfgang Schneiderhan, who was now Inspector General of the Federal Armed Forces , for the post of Group Leader 22 in the Federal Chancellery . The group leader 22 works with the foreign policy advisor, Christoph Heusgen , to the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel . Schneider Hans proposal was ignored and that of the CDU favored Colonel. G. Erich Vad (CDU) left at the post.

On March 10, 2009, Binder finally took over command of the Bundeswehr Transformation Center in Strausberg from Brigadier General Erhard Drews , and with effect from October 1, 2009 he was appointed Brigadier General.

Since the end of 2011, Binder has been deployed abroad as the deputy chief of staff at the headquarters of the Regional Command North of ISAF . After his return from his foreign assignment, Binder was deployed as deputy division commander and commander of the division troops of the 1st Panzer Division in Hanover. From April 2013 to December 2015 he was a sub-department head in the Strategy and Operations department at the Federal Ministry of Defense. In January 2016 he took over his current position as commander of the Strategic Reconnaissance Command.

Binder's awards include the German Armed Forces Cross of Honor in gold, the SFOR medal (national and NATO) and the ISAF medal (national and NATO).

He is married and has two children.
