Helmut Geiger

Helmut Geiger (born June 12, 1928 in Nuremberg ; † January 11, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German economist and politician ( CSU ). From 1972 to 1993 he was President of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association . He was also a leading co-founder, president (1985–1999) and lifelong sponsor of the German Cancer Aid created by Mildred Scheel .

Life and work

After attending school, Geiger was deployed as an air force helper in World War II in 1944/45 . He was most recently taken prisoner by the French, from which he was released in 1948. In 1949 he began to study law and economics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen and at the Free University of Berlin , which he completed in 1954 with the examination for a degree in economics. He then worked as a research assistant to the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and as a legal assistant in Bonn .

Geiger acted from 1959 to 1966 as managing director of the branch of the Landesbausparkassen at the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV) . He had been the managing director or general manager since 1965 and then from 1972 to 1993 the first full-time president of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association (DSGV). In 1970 he became a member of the board of directors of Deutsche Girozentrale, chairing it from 1972 to 1993. From 1985 to 1987 he was also President of the European Savings Banks Association (ESV) and was committed to integrating the state savings banks in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. From 1978 to 1984 he held the presidency of the World Institute of Savings Banks.

From 1993 to 1998 he was the first chairman of the board of the newly established Sparkassenstiftung for international cooperation in Bonn . From 1988 to 1994 he was a member of the supervisory board and advisory board of Giesecke + Devrient . Since 1982 he has been involved in the Ludwig Erhard Foundation and was a member of the board from 1987 to 1999.

Geiger had been a member of the CSU since 1949. He had joined the Junge Union (JU) and was elected district chairman of the JU Upper Franconia in 1956 . In 1963 he became Vice President of the Atlantic Association of Young Politicians .

Geiger was a member of the German Bundestag from June 8, 1965, when he replaced the deceased member Georg Lang , until the end of the electoral term (1965). He entered parliament through the Bavarian State List.

Act

Helmut Geiger's social commitment was among the last four decades, primarily the fight against widespread disease of cancer in all its forms. The cancer organizations particularly valued his mediation of donations for research. Since 1974 he has been a member of the board and, as the successor to Mildred Scheel, from 1985 President of the German Cancer Aid . He handed this office over to Dagmar Schipanski in 1999 . Since then, Geiger has continued to work for the non-profit aid organization. He was already one of the seven founding members and first financial supporters of the cancer aid. From 2015 he was Honorary President of the German Cancer Aid Foundation in Bonn.

Helmut Geiger was also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Kleine Füchse Foundation in Wiesbaden from 2003 to 2011 and then remained an honorary member of the Board of Trustees.

As a Roman Catholic Christian, Geiger was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and was a member of the German Association of the Holy Land .
