Godelieve Quisthoudt-Rowohl (2010)

Godelieve Quisthoudt-Rowohl (born June 18, 1947 in Etterbeek , Belgium ) is a German politician of the Lower Saxony CDU and was a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2019 . She was spokeswoman for the European People's Party (EPP) in the Committee on International Trade (INTA), Chairwoman of the UK Monitoring Group of INTA, Vice- Spokeswoman in the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) and Vice- Chairwoman of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Canada.

Life

Quisthoudt-Rowohl studied chemistry and was a scholarship holder at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen from 1972 to 1973 . In 1973 she received her PhD from the University of Leuven. phil. nat. PhD. From 1974 to 1978 she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Clinical Biochemistry and Physiological Chemistry at the Hannover Medical School . From 1979 to 1988 Quisthoudt-Rowohl worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Linguistics at the University of Hildesheim . In 2009 the University of Hildesheim awarded her an honorary professorship. Quisthoudt-Rowohl held a. a. Guest lectures at the University of Kaliningrad, at the European Business School and at Harvard University.

Political career

Quisthoudt-Rowohl is a member of the CDU and has been politically active in Lower Saxony, Germany and the European Union since the late 1980s.

Germany

Quisthoudt-Rowohl has been a member of the Lower Saxony State Executive Committee since 1990. From 1994 to 2012 she was also a member of the federal board of the CDU . In the context of this activity, she was considered to be a key supporter of Angela Merkel's nomination as candidate for chancellor in 2004.

She has also been a member of the European Committee of the German Bundestag since 2009 and at times a member of the federal executive committee of the Women's Union . From 2005 to 2009 she was chairwoman of the CDU Hildesheim city association.

Europe

Quisthoudt-Rowohl was a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2019 and was therefore one of the longest-serving CDU members of the European Parliament when she left, together with Elmar Brok and Karl-Heinz Florenz . From 1997 to 2007 she worked as quaestor in the Presidium of Parliament. Quisthoudt-Rowohl had specialized primarily in the areas of research and science as well as business and international trade.

The international organization Transparency International awarded Quisthoudt-Rowohl the top grade 0 for the External Activity Indicator as part of the Integrety Watch program. With an attendance rate of 85 percent at parliamentary sessions, it was one of the front runners in the EPP Group .

Political projects and positions

Quisthoudt-Rowohl initiated the first talks between the European marine research institutes and the European Parliament in 2005 in order to discuss the rapidly advancing climate change, global sea level rise, the sustainable use of maritime resources, the increasing threats and damage from tidal waves, earthquakes and extreme weather events as well as the ongoing destruction of the advising on the marine environment and building consensus on the priorities for future marine research .

As part of her membership in the Committee on International Trade , she worked to protect European car manufacturers against dumping prices for Chinese aluminum rims. At their request, the committee strongly criticized Turkey for the fact that Cyprus was still not allowed to export goods there and called on Turkey to ratify the Ankara Protocol as soon as possible . She asked Turkey to effectively enforce copyright law and thus prevent brand piracy . In 2009, she advocated strengthening European small and medium-sized enterprises ( SMEs ) through more participation in international trade and intensifying relations with the USA. She was involved in Russia ratifying a new energy agreement with the EU. Quisthoudt-Rowohl considered the European ban on incandescent lamps to be patronizing and undemocratic because it was decided by the parliament and thus bypassing the public. She helped to cap the charges for mobile calls abroad ( roaming ) within the EU.

In her capacity as an alternate member of the Development Committee, she helped ensure that from 2010 the EU supports student exchanges and projects to promote democracy in China and India and that the Commission gives a higher priority to children's rights. Quisthout worked to ensure that boys and young men are no longer disadvantaged. In 2003 she proposed a review of the use of EU funds for the Palestinian Authority to ensure that it is not being used to support terrorist groups.

As part of the new version of the RoHS directive (2010), Quisthoudt-Rowohl was praised by the PVC manufacturer Vinnolit for opposing the restriction of this material.

At the invitation of the "German Conference at Harvard" (USA), she described the Germans in a lecture. It campaigned to embrace the plurality of modern societies and to understand German and European identities not as opposites, but as complementary.

From 2012 to 2017 she was EPP rapporteur for the EU / USA Free Trade Agreement (TTIP).

In the European elections in 2019 Quisthoudt-Rowohl did not run.

Private life

Quisthoudt-Rowohl is married and has four grown children. She lives in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony . She is chairman of the advisory board of the episcopal foundation “ Together for Life ” in Hildesheim. She is also a founding member of the cathedral building association Hohe Domkirche Hildesheim. She is the patron of the European House of Encounters for Disadvantaged Youngsters. She wears the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
