The Vinnolit GmbH & Co. KG is a company for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), headquartered in Ismaning in Munich , it has since 2014 a member of the American West Lake Group . With a production capacity of 780,000 tons of PVC and 665,000 tons of vinyl chloride monomer per year, the company is one of the leading PVC raw material manufacturers in Europe and the global market and technology leader in PVC specialties. Vinnolit has production facilities in Burghausen , Gendorf , Cologne , Knapsack , Schkopau andHillhouse (UK).

History and organization

The company was founded in 1993 as a joint venture of Hoechst AG and Wacker Chemie AG based in Ismaning. She took over the PVC production of Hoechst AG at the Knapsack and Gendorf locations as well as Wacker Chemie AG in Cologne-Merkenich and Burghausen .

In 2000, Advent International , based in Boston, became the company's main shareholder and in the same year bought Vintron GmbH in Knapsack , which, together with the Vinnolit Monomers Division, secured the raw material supply for Vinnolit GmbH. In April 2003 it was decided to integrate Vintron GmbH into Vinnolit GmbH. In the following years, especially in Knapsack and Burghausen, major investments were made in the production of vinyl chloride as a monomer for PVC production (VCM) and in PVC production. In April 2002, a new vinyl chloride plant was inaugurated in Knapsack, which was financed with 130 million euros by Advent International. In 2004, capacities in direct chlorination and vinyl chloride production as well as in the manufacture of PVC using the suspension process were increased.

In July 2007 Vinnolit took over the paste PVC division of the British Ineos Group with the production facilities in Schkopau and Hillhouse (Great Britain) as well as the marketing of the production in Porto Torres (Italy). In 2014, Advent International sold Vinnolit to the American Westlake Chemical .

environmental Protection

As part of its production activities, Vinnolit GmbH is committed to various activities for sustainable and environmentally friendly PVC production. The company has had a validated sustainability report since 2003.

As early as 2006 it was announced that the chlorine conversion in the Gendorf and Knapsack plants would be switched from the use of amalgam to the energy-saving and more environmentally friendly membrane electrolysis, combined with an increase in chlorine capacities at both locations from 390,000 tons to a total of 430,000 tons per year. As planned, the implementation took place at the end of June 2009 for both Knapsack and Gendorf;

In April 2008, a facility funded by the EU Commission for recycling the process wastewater from a PVC suspension plant was put into operation on an industrial scale at the Knapsack plant . This system is known as "PVClean". According to the company, an ultrafiltration system with a ceramic membrane with a pore diameter of 50 nanometers will recycle and reuse 200,000 m 3 of wastewater per year. Since the suspension process, with a share of around 90 percent, is the most important process in the world for the production of PVC, the recycling process is of particular importance.
