Westlake Chemical is a Houston-based chemical company that was formed in 1986 through the acquisition of a PE plant near Lake Charles from Occidental Petroleum . It produces low-density polyethylene ( LDPE and LLDPE ), styrene and, via chloralkali electrolysis, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl chloride , 1,2-dichloroethane , chlorine and sodium hydroxide . Westlake is North America's largest producer of LDPE.

In 2014, the German PVC manufacturer Vinnolit was taken over.
