Calvert City is a city on the Tennessee River with a population of almost 3,000 in the western US state of Kentucky . Calvert City was named after Potilla Calvert, a wealthy landowner whose gift to the railway company in 1860 greatly encouraged the city's development.
Calvert City has good road, rail and port connections. This made it attractive for industry and is home to steel and, above all, chemical companies. Around 3,800 people work in the 17 industrial companies based in Calvert City. Local residents include Westlake Chemical , Wacker Chemie , Evonik Industries and Arkema . These mainly operate chlor-alkali electrolysis .
history
Potilla Calvert set up his headquarters in Oak Hill in 1860. He donated part of his land to the railway company on the condition that a train station be built. This was the point of origin of the city, which was granted city rights in 1871 .
Most of the city's residential and industrial areas were damaged during the Ohio River floods in 1937. The dam built by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1940s provided sufficient, inexpensive power supplies, which promoted industrial development.
