Ingo Friedrich (born January 24, 1942 in Kutno / Wartheland ) is a German politician ( CSU ), deputy CSU party chairman and former member of the European Parliament . Since March 2007 he has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the sanoris Foundation, Nuremberg. The foundation is dedicated to medical care research. Since 2009 he has been President of the European Economic Senate, and since 2015 Chairman of the Board of the Munich European Conference. From 2015 to 2018 he was President of the Wilhelm Löhe University of Applied Sciences in Fürth .

Life

After completing his military service, Friedrich studied economics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation .

Parallel to his work as a manager in the electrical industry and his political commitment, he received his doctorate in 1971. rer. pole. From 1978 Friedrich became assistant director at Standard Elektrik Lorenz in Stuttgart.

He is married to Britta Friedrich and has two children.

After completing his studies, Friedrich was elected district chairman of the Junge Union Mittelfranken in 1968. In 1972 Friedrich was elected CSU district chairman in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. In the same year he was elected to the municipal parliaments of his hometown Gunzenhausen and the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district.

In the elections to the European Parliament, the CSU put him on the promising fourth place on the party list. In 1994, 1999 and 2004 he was his party's top candidate in the respective European elections.

In the first direct European elections in 1979, Friedrich was elected as a member of the European Parliament, to which he was a member until 2009. There he dealt in particular with economic and currency issues. In 1982 he took over the presidency of the Maschrek / Gulf States delegation of the European Parliament, which is in close contact with all countries in the Middle East. Since 1979, the CSU European politician has been involved in the Paneuropean Union , of which he became International Vice President in 1981.

As Parliament's rapporteur, he called for the European Parliament and the European Commission to introduce a joint transparency register. His proposal was accepted in plenary on May 8, 2008. Friedrich was then a member of a working group that negotiated agreements between the two institutions. The agreement on a joint transparency list between the Commission and Parliament was adopted on June 23, 2011.

As a quaestor and member of the executive committee, Friedrich played a key role in regulating the remuneration for members of parliament in 2009 and abolishing flat rates for air travel. Since then, EU parliamentarians from all member states have received the same pay. Flight costs are no longer reimbursed at a flat rate, but in the amount of the actual costs in order to prevent misuse of expenses. Friedrich also advocated that MPs should no longer employ close relatives as employees.

His political successes also include establishing the European flag as the emblem of the European Community . In 1979, under his leadership, eighteen members of the European Parliament proposed the creation of a European flag for the European Community. The flag was first hoisted in front of the European Commission building on May 29, 1986 .

Friedrich was President of the European Union of SMEs (EMSU) from 1984 to 1990 ; He then took over the office of President of the European SME Forum , a regular round of talks between European SMEs in Brussels. From 1985 he was a member of the executive committee of the CSU economic advisory board. From 1992 to 1999 Friedrich was chairman of the CSU European group in the European Parliament. In 1994 , 1999 and 2004 he was also the top candidate of his party for the respective European elections.

Since 1993 Ingo Friedrich has also been the regional chairman of the Evangelical Working Group (EAK) of the CSU and deputy federal chairman of the EAK of the CDU / CSU. In the same year he was elected deputy party chairman of the CSU. Since 1996 Friedrich has also acted as treasurer of the European People's Party (EPP). He was re-elected as the state chairman of the Evangelical Working Group of the CSU in Bavaria in the state assembly in Ingolstadt on May 31, 2008.

From 1999 to 2007 Friedrich was one of the 14 elected Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament. As one of three vice-presidents in the mediation committee, he assumed the role of management. After he had to give up his vice-presidency in 2007 after Hans-Gert Pöttering was elected President of the European Parliament, he was elected one of the six Quaestors of the European Parliament.

In 2000 he was a member of the first European convention to draft the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights .

At the party congress of the CSU from September 28 to 30, 2007, he acted as conference president and caused an uproar after he refused to speak to Gabriele Pauli after the speech of Prime Minister-designate Günther Beckstein .

In the 2009 European elections, Friedrich did not run again.

Honorary positions

Friedrich played a key role in creating a representation of interests for small and medium-sized enterprises at EU level and was involved in a number of European medium-sized companies. Among other things, he was President of the European Union of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EMSU) from 1984 to 1990 , initiated the establishment of the European Economic and Medium-Sized Business Association and founded the cross-party discussion group for medium-sized businesses in the European Parliament.

In addition, Friedrich was elected President of the European Movement Bavaria in autumn 2001. Since March 2006 he has been teaching European Business at the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences .

Since 2009 Friedrich has been President of the European Economic Senate (EWS), which the former President of the European Court of Auditors Bernhard Friedmann founded in 2003. Above all, executives from medium-sized businesses, but also managers from large corporations such as Deutsche Bahn AG and Telekom AG have come together in the committee. Prominent political members include EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the envoy of the Russian Embassy in Berlin, Oleg Krasnitskiy and the former Prime Minister of Hesse, Roland Koch. Several times a year the EWS organizes panel discussions at which the Senators for Economic Affairs can exchange ideas with leading European politicians from the nation states and EU representatives.

Friedrich is also the board spokesman and co-initiator of the Munich European Conference, a politically independent and non-partisan discussion forum that has always been held on the day before the Munich Security Conference since 2015. Prominent personalities from politics and business will discuss developments within the EU and their external role at the conference. The board of directors includes the former Federal Minister of Finance Theo Waigel and the managing director of the Munich Security Conference Benedikt Franke. One focus of the debate in 2016 and 2017 was the euro crisis.

In February 2013 he was made an honorary member of SME Europe , the SME and business association within the European People's Party.

Awards

Ingo Friedrich received the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1986 . In 1995 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria . Since January 2004 he has been the holder of the Great Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and since 2006 of the Croatian Order of Prince Trpimir . In 2006 the Union of European Federalists named him a European Honorary Senator. In 2007 he received the European SME Award.
